Very Good to Excellent: Well-developed introductory paragraph contains detailed background; a clear explanation or
definition of the problem, and a thesis statement. Conclusion summarizes the main topics with writer’s opinions are logical
and well thought out.

Three or more main points are well-developed with supporting details. The details have clear and logical analysis, original and
insightful ideas.
CONTENT & IDEAS Adequate to Good: Introductory paragraph contains some background information and states the problem, but does not
(30%) explain using details. States the thesis of the paper.
Introduction Conclusion summarizes main topics. Some suggestions for change are evident.

Very Good to Excellent: Logical, compelling progression of ideas in entry; clear structure which enhances and showcases

Adequate to Good: Overall, the entry is logically developed. Progression of ideas in this entry makes sense and moves the

reader easily through the text. Strong transitions exist throughout and add to the entry’s coherence.
Transition
Fair: Progression of ideas in this entry is awkward, yet moves the reader through the text without too much confusion. The
2-3 writer sometimes lunges ahead too quickly or spends too much time on details that do not matter. Transitions appear
sporadically, but not equally throughout the entry.
Poor: Arrangement of entry is unclear and illogical. The writing lacks a clear sense of direction. Ideas, details or events seem
0-1 string together in a loose or random fashion; there is no identifiable internal structure and readers have trouble following the
writer’s line of thought. Few, forced transitions in the entry or no transitions are present.

Very Good to Excellent: Grammatical elements (Week 1-5) are profoundly and correctly used in text. Majority of the sentences
conform to subject verb agreement in accordance to specific grammatical category.

Extremely fluent and articulate relation of ideas; effective, powerful tone and language use; quotes, paraphrases and
16-20 summaries expertly woven into own writing; structural design versatile and complex. A variety of thoughtful transitions show
how ideas are connected. Pacing is well-controlled.

Style (Sentence Structure): Sentences are clear and varied in pattern, from simple to complex, with excellent use of
punctuation.

Style (Word choice & Tone): There is clear use of a personal (profound use of personal pronoun “I”) and unique style of
writing, suited to audience and purpose; the entry holds the reader’s interest with ease.
