Precautions
! DANGER
Do not install or remove a power cable with power on. Transient contact between the
core of the power cable and the conductor might generate electric arc or spark, which
can cause fire or damage to the human body. Before installing or removing the power
cable, turn off the power. During the device power-on, do not wear the ESD wrist strap.
This helps prevent electric shock.

! CAUTION
Before touching the device, or holding the boards, wear the antistatic gloves or the
antistatic wrist strap to prevent the electrostatic discharge of the human body from
damaging the sensitive components. Ensure that the other end of the antistatic wrist
strap is well grounded. Before installing devices, ensure that the cabinet is effectively
grounded.

4b Connecting the PGND Cables
Use the PGND cables to connect
the device to the ground bar or
ground point of the grounded
cabinet. A PGND cable must
be as short as possible and
generally cannot exceed 45 cm.

! CAUTION
Ensure that the device is effectively connected to the
nearest ground to avoid noises in voice calls.

4c Connecting the Network Cables

Use network cables to connect the
following ports to the switch:
• CVP: FE1 and FE2
• SCU: GE0 and GE1
The adaptive network ports support both
straight-through and crossover cables. To
ensure sufficient network bandwidth, use
Cat 5e GE network cables.
• If there are active and standby SCU boards (U1981), connect network cables
to both SCU boards.
• On the BTU board (U1911&U1960&U1981), use a straight-through network
cable to connect the BRI S/T port to the peer NT device.
4d Connecting the E1/T1 Trunk Cables
Connect and fasten one end of the E1/T1 trunk cable to the E1/T1 port on the
CVP or MTU board, and connect the other end to the E1/T trunk cable of the
peer device directly or through the distribution frame. Connection rules:
• E1 cable: For the same link number X, connect local TX to peer RX and local
RX to peer TX.
• T1 cable: For the same link number X, connect local RX/TX to peer RX/TX.

4e Connecting the High-Density User Cables
Connect and fasten one end of the high-density user cable to the FXS/FXO
port on the ASI or OSU board, and connect the other end to a POTS phone or
an FXS port of the upper-level office directly or through the distribution frame.
The high-density user cable delivered with the device has no RJ11 connector
assembled. See appendix d to assemble an RJ11 connector if you need one.

5 Powering on and Checking the Device
5a Powering On the Device
Connect the device to an external power supply and turn the switch on the panel
of the power module to ON. When the device is powered on, it takes about five
minutes to start. After the device starts, the fan sound becomes low.

5b Checking the Indicators

The following table lists the normal status of each indicator. If any exception
occurs, contact technical support engineers.
Indicator Name Color Normal Status
PWR Green On
RUN Green Blinking
ALM Red Off
LOS* Yellow Off
RFA* Yellow Off

* The LOS and RFA indicators on CVP and MTU boards indicate physical
connection status of each E1/T1 trunk. If they are off, the connection is proper.
Otherwise, check the cable connector and the peer device. The CVP board
(U1930) allows two E1/T1 trunks to share the same pair of indicators. The
indicators are off only when the both E1/T1 trunks are connected properly.

5c Logging In to the Device for the First Time

Connect a PC (IP address: 192.168.1.x except 192.168.1.17) to the device
through the switch, and open https://192.168.1.17/login_admin.asp in a browser.
If the message "There is a problem with this websites's security certificate."
is displayed, click Continue to this website (not recommended). Use the
default administrator account and password (admin/Change_Me) to log in to
the device and configure it.

Follow-up Procedure
Visit http://support.huawei.com/enterprise, download the eSpace U1900 Unified
Gateway Product Documentation or eSpace UC IPT Quick Configuration Guide,
log in to the device, and begin to configure it according to the guide. You can
also use a mobile device to scan the following QR code to download and read
related electronic documents.

c Assembling the RJ48C Connector (for 120-ohm E1 Cables)
The 75-to-120 ohm E1 trunk balun box can convert 75-ohm unbalanced single-ended
signals of the device to 120-ohm balanced differential signals so that the device can
connect to a variety of peer devices through E1 trunks. If the peer connector is not
RJ48C, you can reassemble a RJ48C connector by referring to the pin assignment. If
you do not have a RJ48C connector, use a RJ45 connector instead.

e Assembling the RJ45 Connector (for Network Cables)
The device has adaptive network ports and can connect to the switch using straight-
through or crossover cables. The BTU board of the U1911&U1960&U1981 can also
connect to the peer NT device using straight-through network cables. If you need to
prepare a straight-through or crossover cable, strip off the jacket of the twisted-pair
cable, insert the core wires into the eight-pin feet of a RJ45 connector according to the
pin assignment described in the following table, and use a crimping tool to crimp the
connector.
