FESTIVALS IN THE PHILIPPINES

MALASIMBO MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL

The Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival, which began in 2011, provides a platform for
Mindoro's indigenous people to present their
culture and creativity. The event is and will
always be a celebration of and for the
Mangyans, above and beyond the concept of
having fun and partying. It's natural to imagine
that an event of this magnitude will have a
negative impact on the environment, yet one of
the festival's main aims is to encourage
environmental conservation and protection.
Thousands of hardwood trees, herbal and medicinal plants, mangrove seedlings, and
other plants have been planted with a portion of the revenues since the year it began.
One of Malasimbo's foundations is to conserve and cherish its people's culture. That is
why, in collaboration with the LGU, the d'Aboville Foundation ensured that this event
included the Mangyan people. You may show your support by going to the Ivatan
villages and meeting the lovely people there, as well as purchasing any of their
handcrafted accessories, textiles, homeware, and other items. Some of the revenues
from ticket sales will be used to assist Mindoro's indigenous populations. It celebrated
from Feb 29 – March 1.

TUNA FESTIVAL
In 1998, the General Santos City Tourism
Association – a group of hotels, resorts,
restaurants, travel agencies, and other tourism-
related businesses led by Mrs. Liwanag Ferrer –
held a "Tuna Revolution" event at the Halieus
Mall (now RD Plaza) to promote tuna cuisine
through culinary competitions, exhibits, and
other activities to commemorate the city's 30th
city charter anniversary. Mayor Adelbert W.
Antonio then realized that the concept might be turned into a celebration, and so the
Tuna Festival was formed. The only festival that has effectively branded Gensan as the
"Tuna Capital of the Philippines" is the Tuna Festival. Activities honoring the city's
principal business (fishing) remained a yearly challenge for festival stakeholders and
event organizers to live up to the moniker.

The task of raising the bar and introducing innovations in the celebration, as well as
maintaining its promotion and marketing, has remained in our quest for continual
originality over the years. The decision to institutionalize Gensan Festivals is the most
significant shift. The second step is to establish a Festival Board, which will approve the
festival's events. The goal is to distinguish
the Kalilanga. It celebrated in the first week
of September.
