MY JOURNEY IN DISCRETE STRUCTURES 1

Discrete Math is one of the best subjects in CS, without it, most other subjects
would be really difficult to understand. Some students will wonder how is discrete
mathematics used in computer science. Discrete Mathematics provides an essential
foundation for virtually every area of computer science, and its applications are
correspondingly vast. When programming, it is important to be confident that your code
will achieve the desired results. Programs can be described precisely with mathematics,
and the tools of propositional logic can be used to reason about their correctness. Logic
is the language used for most formal specification languages, and is fundamental for
understanding much of the literature in verification and in programming language
foundations and design. The problem-solving techniques honed in discrete mathematics
are necessary for writing complicated software. Students who are successful in discrete
mathematics will be able to generalize from a single instance of a problem to an entire
class of problems, and to identify and abstract patterns from data.

As i take my journey in this subject i experience hardship but i pass trough it all because
our teacher provide us clearly discussed lesson that provide us with information and
ideas. This subject make me think outside of the box sometimes. It requires me to be
creative and sharpen my critical thinking skills as well as imagine the problem and solve
it. Some of the subtopic in Discrete Structure is sets. It's important because the concept
of set is basic to all of mathematics and mathematical applications. It serves as a basis
of description of higher concept and mathematical reasoning . Set is fundamental in
many areas of Computer Science. For us, sets are useful to understand the principles
of counting and probability theory. Most of the statements in mathematics and computer
science are described properly by the propositions. Since most of the statements in
mathematics and computer science use variables, the system of logic must be extended
to include statements with the variables. Discrete maths provide the skills one need to
go into a lot of different computer course qualification for example database. Schools
are teaching the basic skills of discrete maths such as algorithm, but even so the

student always said it is very complicated and they can’t get their head around it and
why they have to do it because it’s one of those math that they will rarely use in their
daily life. So why not just stuck to the common mathematics that they will come across
in the future, but they have the wrong about the concept, because most things that we
do on the internet involve such type of maths, for example shopping online, browsing
the web, not because we can’t see it with our naked eyes doesn’t mean it is not working
in the background, with the fast growing of computer problems and data entry which
most of us come across even once in our lifetime uses discrete maths. It also helps
students to think mathematically and logically when they are doing a project to
completion, it is important for students if they wanted to master the concept of computer
science, then knowing how discrete maths works used necessary to achieve a high
level of understanding of computer science.

Although discrete maths is difficult to understand, it is a major skill to have when

pursuing a career in computer science or mathematics, sciences, if the concept of such
maths is not learned then the ability achieving a qualification in one of those examples
given will be hard to achive. Discrete mathematics is the foundation of computer
science. It focuses on concepts and reasoning methods that are studied using math
notations. It has long been argued that discrete math is better taught with programming,
which takes concepts and computing methods and turns them into executable
programs.
In simple words, I would say that discrete structure is one of the best subject in my
journey as a computer science student because it gives an individual the ability to
understand mathematical language that can be learned through various branches of it
and i can use this learning to pursue my dreams.
