Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it: (10 1= 10)
Everybody who knew young David Hartman, thought he was riding for a fall. Even his
‘own family realized this as David was born with defective lenses, had gone completely
blind at the age of 8. Though David was blind his ambition was to become a doctor, a
psychiatrist. He often discussed with his father about this and would ask him, "Father,
tell me honestly. Do you think I can ever be a doctor"? David's father Fred Hartman,
a bank officer would always reply, "Well, You'll never know unless you try, will you?"
He did not want to disappoint his son by a flat ‘Nol. He knew that none of the medical
college would accept his blind son as a student.
The family was determined to help David to become as independent as possible, At
times David panicked by darkness, would cry out, "Mama I can't stand it”. His mother
Idamae Hartman would read to him nearly every night to stimulate his imagination, At
the age of 13 David announced that he was going to be a doctor. He insisted on leaving
the Iocal blind school, enrolled at Havertown's high school. He got good marks, won
a place on the wrestling team and was elected Vice-president of the student Council
there.
At college, the Blology Professor Ralf Cavaliere and other advisers suggested him to
settle for something within his capabilities, like History or Psychology and refused to
a34)
allow him in his class, But David argued that he is no different from anybody else. He
also stated his wish that he wants to become a psychiatrist because he knew he would
make a good one - especially in helping rehabilitate people with problems similar to
his own. From that moment on Cavaliere was David's staunch allay.
David completed his four years of college with top marks in 1972. Then he applied to
ten medical colleges, nine rejected. But one institution named — Temple University
School of Medicine in Philadelphia accepted him as its student. Dr. M. Prince Brigham,
assistant dean in charge of admissions and student affairs argued and got him
admission,
In the first year of Medical college anatomy — introductory course held special problems
for him. He could not identify small things like nerve plexuses as he had to wear
rubber gloves into the cadavers, so he had to use his bare hands, his fingers would go
numb from the preservative = formaldehyde used. Histology, the study of microscopic
structures made him depend on his teacher's and classmates’ descriptions.
Inthe second year David had to keep up with sixlectures a day where he was unable to
write, So he began organizing a massive home library with the help of RFB - Recording
for the Blind, It helped 5,000 America's blind students by providing free tapes of
text books. David Would record 6 hours of lectures on tape and dictate summaries into
the second. This would take him 12 hours of homework everyday!
In the third year he had to work with real patients. He could not read X rays, see the
colour of skin rashes where he had to depend on nurses or patients themselves. But
he had special ability to listen and skilful using a stethoscope. However he got highest
marks which made his physical diagnosis teacher, Dr. John Martin feel proud.
By the end of his final year David had made believers of all his doubters, On May 27
1976, David Hartman received his medical degree. In his view he had proved the most
important thing: that he was no different from anyone else. Dr. Martin declared that
"Hartman's net normal — he's super-normal".
