What is empathy?

Empathy is the ability to imagine the experience of another and to share their feelings/provide

understanding. When you’re engaging with empathy, you’re attempting to understand the root cause of

why someone may feel the way they do, and you’re imagining what it may feel like to ‘be in their shoes’.

How is empathy different than sympathy?

Sympathy may help us provide support to others, but it still involves a concentration of offering understanding

from our own perspective. Empathy goes a step further; we try to truly imagine what it must be like to be

in another’s situation. When we engage in this type of understanding, it often allows us to respond

with even greater compassion.

Research the following question online:

1. Name a famous people in history that you think showed empathy through
their words or actions.

2. How do you think their empathic words or actions contributed towards changing the lives
of others (even future generations)? Did their empathetic acts contribute to their fame/us
remembering them in history?
