Programme of Study: A Guide to Your Associate Degree Completion

The Department of Liberal Arts offers three Associate Degrees:

 Associate Degree in Humanities and Fine Arts

 Associate Degree in Science and Mathematics

 Associate Degree in Social Sciences

Duration: Two-year programme

Courses: There are three different types of courses: Core courses, Foundation courses, and Electives.

Core courses- These courses align with your specific degree programme and include courses that have an
external exam component. Students should take three (3) core courses every semester.

Foundation courses – These courses are mandatory courses that every student must pass in order to complete
their degree programme. With the exception of Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies, these courses
are not CAPE subjects and do not have an external exam.

Electives – These courses allow students to have a more-rounded learning experience. All electives may not be
offered every semester. Courses that are undersubscribed may not be offered. Students must take 2 courses to
complete graduation requirements.

Exemptions - Students who passed CSEC Caribbean History or successfully complete a semester of Caribbean
Studies (offered in Year 2) will be exempted from the Caribbean History Foundation course. Students in the
Science and Mathematics programme who successfully complete a semester of Mathematics (Pure, Applied or
Integrated) will satisfy the Foundation Mathematics requirement. There will be no exemptions for electives.

Graduation Requirements: A total of 72 credits with a 2.0 cumulative GPA. The student must have 48
credits in their degree core subjects and the foundation and elective courses requirement should be satisfied.
The following table provides a general template of the amount and type of courses that are required to complete
the Associate Degree Programme. A student should complete their courses from the School/Programme that
they intend to get their Associate Degree. For example, Social Science Students should take core courses from
that programme/School.
