Evolution of

Computers
Calculating machines, which are regarded as the
earliest programmable computers, were
originally developed in the 1930s.

In 1936, Konrad Zuse built the Z1, the first

programmed computer, in his parents' Berlin living
room. He put together metal plates, pins, and old

film to make an add/subtract machine. Zuse is

recognized as having developed the first digital

computer, despite the fact that his prototypes
were lost during World War II.

TO THE PRESENT.

Computers like the ENIAC, which was once referred to
as a "mathematical robot," occupied entire rooms in the
1940s.

In order to assist the Army with ballistics analytics during

World War II, John Mauchly developed the ENIAC. The
device was capable of solving thousands of issues per
second. The large-scale ENIAC required a 1,500 square
foot room and weighed 30 tons to accommodate its 40
cabinets, 6,000 switches, and 18,000 vacuum tubes.
Computers, such as the JOHNNIAC, which was
originally referred to be a "helpful assistant" for
mathematicians, were only utilized for scientific
and engineering research in the 1950s.

In 1954, the JOHNNIAC was finished, and RAND

researchers used it. With more than 5,000 vacuum

tubes, the huge machine weighed slightly more

than two tons. Before being destroyed, this old

computer ran for 13 years or 51,349 hours.

The first computer mouse was created by Douglass E. in
1963; it was called a mouse because of the tail poking
out of the end.

Douglas Engelbart of SRI International started creating

the mouse in the early 1960s while researching how
people and computers interact. In 1964, Bill English, who
was SRI's top engineer at the time, created the first
computer mouse prototype. Soon designs with many
buttons appeared.
When the Programma 101 was the first desktop
computer to be marketed to the common
customer in the 1960s, everything changed.

Computers were only used by mathematicians and

engineers in a lab setting up until 1965. By making

The Xerox Alto paved the way for Steve Jobs' Apple
during the 1970s personal computer era.

In the 1970s, the Xerox Alto was developed as a home

computer with email and document printing
capabilities. The design of the computer, which
featured a mouse, keyboard, and screen, was what
was most notable about it. This cutting-edge design
would later have an impact on Apple designs in the
decade that followed.
Apple's Macintosh was hailed as a game-changer
for the computer industry in the 1980s.

Consumer Reports praised the initial Macintosh

computer, which had a keyboard, mouse, and a
tiny 9-inch screen, when Steve Jobs unveiled it in

weighed 22 pounds, received praise for its windows
and icon interface.

The iconic, customisable iMac G3 was produced by
Apple during the 1990s, which were a time of self-
expression.

Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, and the iMac G3

was released in 1998. The computer's clear Bondi blue
shell immediately gained notoriety. The 38-pound iMac
had a keyboard, mouse, and USB connections. Both
portability and adaptability were intended.
Early in the new millennium, laptops gained
popularity, especially after Apple introduced the
MacBook Air.

At Apple's Macworld, Steve Jobs unwrapped the first

engineered laptop, only 0.76 inches thick, completely

altered the business landscape. Apple just put a USB
connector and a headphone jack instead of the CD
drive.

In the present, computers come in a variety of sizes
and designs.

Computers have a wide range of modern features

that cater to the needs of people today. It can handle
astonishing new features and various styles.
Prediction
I think there will be a lot of changes in the computer industry
over the next five years, especially because 2022 has already
shown us a ton of impressive features that go beyond the typical
computers.

My own prediction and analysis indicates that, in the near future,

I envision computers becoming more slender and light weight. I
also imagine that it will be more in line with and analogous to the
characteristics of our smartphone operations. Computer will, as
predicted, have more great graphics and storage capacity. In
addition, I want to presumptively predict that during the
following five years, computers will be wireless, similar to laptops.
It will continue to develop and incorporate advantageous
features that are relevant and meet the demands of the people
over the course of the next five years.
Use of computers

in Engineering in

general and in

Civil Engineering

in particular
Applications of computers in engineering generally:
Computer assists engineers in planning and processing the
voluminous paperwork that is necessary for their work.
Sometimes serves as communication tool for them.
Helps in accurately doing complex calculations and solving
issues with several variables, as well as speeding up access to
and storage of vast amounts of information.

Applications of computers in civil engineering particularly:

Aids in streamlining the design process and offers the finest options for a
structure or project.
Assists in creating stronger structures for houses, buildings, and blocks by
using building maps on computers.
Makes it possible for ideas, designs and information to be processed and
modified more quickly than ever before, and ensuring that everything will
be measured as accurately as possible.
