Work experience report

Organisation.

Nakasero Hospital is a private hospital started in 2009 with a goal of setting up a

world class hospital that would meet the healthcare needs of Ugandans and East
Africans who were seeking medical treatment outside the region, due to the gap in
quality healthcare services in the country. The hospital aims to be a world-class
tertiary medical care hospital with the mission to provide quality, sustainable,
compassionate health care by leveraging local and international talent and
state-of-the-art technology. The hospital is a private upscale hospital; one of the
five most exclusive private healthcare facilities in Kampala, Uganda's capital.
Those hospitals have been established over the last 20 years, beginning with
International Hospital Kampala in 1996, to address the gap in specialized tertiary
healthcare delivery in the country and to serve that segment of Uganda's
population that has been seeking the missing services from outside Uganda. In
June 2019, at the occasion of marking the 10th anniversary of the founding of the
hospital, Dr. Edward Rukwaro, the hospital's chief executive officer, announced
that the hospital was about to undergo major renovations and expansion, to the
tune of US$10 million. The expansion will create new departments of (a)
Cardiology (b) Gynecology (focusing on in vitro fertilisation) (c) Orthopedic
surgery (including spine and joint surgery) and (d) Pediatrics.

My experience

Before work experience my knowledge of the medical field on a state level

was minimal and when it comes to patient care and related procedures, I knew
nothing at all. Now that my 1-week Work experience is over, I feel I have really
learned a lot. First of all, I became more familiar with the organization of
Nakasero hospital-on a state level. Secondly, I got acquainted with functions and
responsibilities of the hospital in general and, of course, got highly involved in
the daily life of our Division. I didn’t just learn to do my daily tasks, but got an
insight into the strengths of management, as well as its weaknesses and the
need for improvement.
On the other hand, I can’t say that this work experience was not challenging
and I had to put a lot of hard work. A few days after the beginning I started
hoping for a wider variety of assignments to keep myself busy and motivated.
What is more, I felt like my work did not matter that much and I could have put
my potential to a better use, but that’s just probably a matter of my ambitions.
Despite the fact that this work experience didn’t keep me as much interested
as I wished, I admit that there still is quite a lot to learn, for example, I would like
to know more about the types of medical practice, what exactly renders them
useful to the betterment of mankind, specific effects on the patients while
collecting history. Another thing of great value would be to get more familiar with
policy-making on an international level. First of all, I’d love to get involved in the
work of the surgeons and pathologists as a national contact point – discuss daily
issues and share experiences , as well as participate in annual meetings.

Most of my daily tasks could be divided into the following categories:

● Checking on the patients in the ward

● Shadowing my supervisors
● Hellping with writing prescriptions

My feilds

General surgeons perform consultation and surgery on medical conditions

involving the breast, endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract, colon, liver,
pancreas and rectum. Nakasero Hospital general surgeons are among the most
experienced groups in the country.

The department of general surgery provides modern, comprehensive surgical

care for both routine and critically ill patients.

Nakasero Hospital’s general surgeons work closely with other specialists involved
in each patient’s care to diagnose and provide timely surgical intervention for
complex conditions. Our caring staff take the time to explain the details and make
sure all questions are answered.i worked closly with my supervisor dr owori in
this division where we would visit the patients that had undergone surgeries. We
examined the patients conditions and i was allowed a more hands on experience
where i got to feel an enlarged spleen of a patient. We also went through a
physical and mental evaluation of a patient who had sufered from a high speed
vehicle collision accident where the patient had suffred head trama and had to
stay in the hospital for a few days. My time in the A&E was suprising compared to
my expectations. I was under the empression that acccident and emergency
would always be busy compared with my experience. The A&E was slower than
expected because there wer no accidents that occured while i was in my shift
hours. Although there were not any accidents that happened i was given the
opportunity to experince what a doctor patient interview and in turn learnt how to
properly aquire patient history without sounding confrontational.
Conclusion

In conclussion i belive that my work experiejnce has widended my eyes to the

medical feild and has made me think twice in my carre in that specific field in
medicine but, it gave me alot of things to think about. At tthe end of every visit
with the patients ,they would say thank you ( even to me who was just observing)
which also made me consider taking up this feild in medicine. I am grateful for the
opportunity to get to experince medicine in practile use and see the effects of the
work that doctors do that save so many peoples lives on a daily basis.
