1. Use Tooling (F) to install bearing cups (56) into the center housing.
2. Install bearing cones (38) and (39) . Install Tooling (G) .
3. Align the location marks that were made during the removal procedure. Position brake cylinder
assembly (5) and temporarily install bolts (10) . Repeat for the opposite side.
4. Install Tooling (H) into the center housing. Make sure that Tooling (H) is inserted into both
brake cylinders.
5. Use Tooling (J) in order to measure Distance (A) . Distance (B) equals 145 mm (5.7 inch).
Distance (C) equals 50 mm (2.0 inch). Use the following formula in order to calculate
Measurement (X) : A mm + C mm - B mm = X mm. Record Measurement (X) .
6. Measurement (V) is stamped on the head of pinion shaft (35) . Use the following formula in
order to calculate Measurement (S) : X mm - V mm = S mm.
7. Among the available list of shims, choose the shim with the thickness of Measurement (S) .
8. Remove Tooling (H) . Remove brake cylinder assemblies (5) . Remove the nut and the washer
from Tooling (G) and remove Tooling (G) . Remove bearing cones (38) and (39) .

9. Install the suitable shim onto pinion shaft (35) . Install the shim with the chamfer against the
gear. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (39) and install bearing cone (41) onto pinion shaft
(35) .
10. Install washers (36) and collapsible spacer (37) onto pinion shaft (35) .
11. Install pinion shaft (35) into the center housing. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (38) and
install bearing cone (38) onto pinion shaft (35) .
12. Install seal (34) into the center housing.
Note: Check the O-ring seal for wear or for damage. If necessary, replace the O-ring seal.
13. Install brake disc (31) , O-ring seal (32) , washer (33) , and nut (30) .
14. Use Tooling (D) with a dial type torque wrench in order to set the rotating torque. Tighten nut
(30) in order to achieve a rotating torque of 1.80 to 2.60 N·m (16.0 to 23.0 lb in).
15. Use a suitable hammer and a punch and stake nut (30) .
Note: Bevel gear assembly must be installed on the differential before the collar (17) is
installed.
16. Install pins (16) . Install collar (17) .
17. Install thrust washer (28) and side gear (29) . Install spider (27) , gears (26) , and thrust washers
(25) .
18. Install planetary shafts (24) . Install locking pins (23) . Install side gear (22) and thrust washer
(21) . Install cover (20) .
19. Raise the temperature of bearing cones (14) and (15) . Install bearing cones (14) and (15) .
Note: Bevel gear (19) must be installed on the differential before the collar (17) is installed.
20. Install bevel gear (19) onto the differential. Apply Tooling (K) to the threads of bolts (18) .
Install bolts (18) and tighten bolts (18) to a torque of 180 N·m (133 lb ft).
Note: Check the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. If necessary, replace the O-ring seals.
21. Apply a thin coat of grease onto O-ring seals (6) . Install O-ring seals (6) onto brake piston (7) .
22. Install brake piston (7) into brake cylinder assembly (5) . Make sure that the holes on brake
piston (7) align with the holes in brake cylinder assembly (5) . Make sure that the brake piston
(7) is installed all the way to the bottom of brake cylinder assembly (5) . If necessary, tap brake
piston (7) with a rubber mallet in order to install brake cylinder assembly (5) completely to the
bottom.
Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily
injury.
To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure

and wear protective equipment.
23. Install springs (9) and the bolts. Install bolts (8) . Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 10 N·m (89 lb
in). Tighten springs and bolts (9) to a torque of 10 N·m (89 lb in).
24. Position brake cylinder assembly (5) on a flat surface. Use Tooling (F) to install bearing cup
(13) .
25. Use Tooling (A) and install spanner nut (12) into brake cylinder assembly (5) .
26. Apply Tooling (L) to the mating surfaces of the center housing and the left brake cylinder
assembly (5) . Align the location marks that were made during the removal procedure. Position
brake cylinder assembly (5) onto the center housing and install bolts (10) . Tighten bolts (10) to
a torque of 79 N·m (58 lb ft).

and wear protective equipment.
Note: Check the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. If necessary, replace the O-ring seals.
27. Position fork (46) into the center housing. Install shaft (47) , spring (48) , bushing (49) ,
retaining ring (50) , O-ring seals (51) , piston (52) , O-ring seal (53) , and cover (54) . Apply
Tooling (K) to the threads of bolts (55) and install bolts (55) . Install retaining ring (45) ,
washer (44) , spring (43) , O-ring seal (42) , and cover (41) . Apply Tooling (K) to the threads
of bolts (40) and install bolts (40) . Tighten bolts (40) and (55) to a torque of 23 N·m (17 lb in).
28. Install the differential into the left side of the center housing.
29. Apply Tooling (L) to the mating surfaces of the center housing and the right brake cylinder
assembly (5) . Align the location marks that were made during the removal procedure. Position
brake cylinder assembly (5) onto the center housing and install bolts (10) . Tighten bolts (10) to
a torque of 79 N·m (58 lb ft). Use Tooling (A) and install spanner nut (12) .
30. Oscillate the pinion shaft and use Tooling (A) to advance the spanner nuts until there is slight
backlash with no end play.
31. Install a dial type torque wrench onto the pinion shaft. Measure the total rotating torque. Use
the following formula in order to calculate the total rotating torque (TRT): P equals the rotating
torque that was measured in Step 14. TRT = P + 0.280 N·m (2.48 lb in) to P + 0.467 N·m
(4.13 lb in)
32. If, the total rotating torque (TRT) is less than the specified amount tighten both spanner nuts
equally. If the total rotating torque (TRT) is greater than the specified amount, loosen both
spanner nuts equally. Always maintain slight backlash.
Typical example
33. Mount Tooling (M) onto the center housing. Measure the backlash between the pinion and the
bevel gear. The proper backlash setting is 0.180 to 0.230 mm (0.0071 to 0.0091 inch).
34. If the backlash is not within the specification, retract one spanner nut and advance the opposite
spanner nut equally order to maintain the bearing preload. If the backlash is less than the
specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (A) . If the backlash is greater than the
specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (B) .
35. Install retainer (11) and bolt (11A) into both brake cylinder assemblies (5) . Tighten bolts (11A)
to a torque of 13 N·m (10 lb in).
Note: There is a raised shoulder on coupling (4) . Ensure that the raised shoulder on the
coupling is positioned toward the axle housing.
Note: Make sure that you align the tear-shaped holes in brake discs (2) in order to provide
proper flow of oil for cooling, as shown.
36. Install dowels (3) . Install one steel disc (1) and one fiber brake disc (2) . Install coupling (4)
with brake discs (2) and plates (1) into the axle housing.
End By: Install the axle housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing, Axle Shaft,
and Wheel Flange - Install".
