With the link below, learn more about chemical reaction rates. Then answer the
following questions.

1. Dissolved in a liter of water, a chemical reaction is taking place between two reactants.
What will be the effect on the reaction rate If an additional liter of pure water is added to
the reaction mixture?

Smaller volume Bigger volume

- Less space for the two reactants to travel - More space for the two reactants to travel
- Causes more collisions of reactants - Lessens the possibility of the two not
meeting each other
- By increasing the number of collisions, we
also increase the likelihood that some of - Decreases the likelihood that some of the

the reaction.

In conclusion, if an additional liter of water is added, it will slow down the reaction rate. Since
under higher pressure or at a higher concentration, the reactants will collide more frequently and
react at a faster rate. In the video, the first proposal of the teacher is to shrink the size of the
hallways so that there will be more collisions. To increase the reaction rate, the hallways were
shrank thus for the same to happen in the given, the water where the substance is dissolved
should have been lessened.

2.Most of the time we wish to decrease the rates of certain reactions rather than speeding them
up. For instance, prolonging the shelf lives of certain foods, the chemical reactions by which
they spoil must be slowed down. How can this be accomplished by using the factors introduced
in the video above?
Adding heat to certain foods like jams, syrups and sauces can prolong its shelf life because heat
can also destroy micro-organisms to maintain product sterility. Food manufacturers add
catalysts like food preservatives will slow down reaction rate to make food spoil slowly.

3.Liquid ethanol combusts slowly with a blue flame while ethanol gas cans rapidly combust and
even causes dangerous explosions in some circumstances. What factor affecting reaction rates
explains this difference in reactivity? The factor affecting reaction rate is energy and surface
area.

Gas ethanol has a widely separated molecules, they are like the opposite end of magnet that
are repelling in a closed container so when freed it create a great pressure (energy) making it to
combust rapidly and, the chance of explosion is when their energy is increased and the surface
area cannot hold them. While liquid ethanol doesn’t have a molecule as wide as gas, so the
energy is low making it to combust slowly.

The heat added on both ethanols makes their energy higher, but for liquid it must go under
evaporation (break up the particles just like with the gas) for it to level up with the gas ethanol.
Small containers makes the explosion because of the pressure that have been built up inside so
it will cause sudden explosion.
