HOW RATE OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS IS AFFECTED?

A. Matching Type
DIRECTIONS: Match Column A with the correct explanation of the result of each
process from Column B:

Column A Column B
1.Bread dough placed in an oven A. The particles of the reactant will slow
rises quickly down resulting in less frequent collisions
2. Meat is chopped into smaller B. Higher temperature will cause reactants
pieces to cook faster to move faster resulting in greater collisions
3. Heat is removed then slows cooking C. Greater surface area of reactants will
the result to more exposure to the other
reactant resulting in more collisions
4.Catalytic converter is used for cars D. Contributory factors such as air and
and minimizes harmful gas emissions moisture speed up the reaction
5. Steels stored outside and form rust E. Exhaust gases hydrocarbons and
nitrogen oxides will transform to CO2
and water vapor
B. Complete the Table
DIRECTIONS: Analyze the following scenarios and fill in the table with the required
answers.

DIRECTIONS: Read the following and answer the activity that follows.

Here are some demonstrations of the factors affecting the rate of reactions in daily life:

• FRUITS ON POST-HARVEST
Ethene or ethylene gas is a phytohormone that is said to promote ripening in a variety of
fruits including mangoes, melons, lemons, bananas, papayas, pineapples, and tomatoes.
Fruits such as guava, banana, mango, papaya, and pineapple are usually harvested once
they reached maturity then ripe rapidly during transit and when stored. Non-climacteric fruits
do not ripen after harvest such as oranges and strawberries that’s why they are harvested
when they are fully ripened. Tomatoes take more than half of a month to reach full maturity.
Farmers harvest tomatoes while they are still green. Spraying ethene or ethylene is then
induced when they reach their destination to stimulate the ripening hormones of tomatoes and
made available to markets.

• EFFECTIVE ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION

Different alcohols with different uses are available in the markets. Which do we choose
when we are looking for an effective cleaner and disinfectant? 70% solution is so effective as
a general-purpose cleaner and disinfectant and is fit for human use. It is high-moisture alcohol
that evaporates slower and stays longer without drying immediately. It is less flammable also
and generally used for large surface disinfection. Higher concentrations of isopropyl and ethyl
alcohols have the lowest presence of water. It evaporates fast and may not kill microbes. Once
alcohol concentration drops, its effectiveness to disinfect also lowers.

• OCTANE RATING LEVEL
The higher the octane rating, the more stable the fuel is. Retail gasoline stations sell main
grades of gasoline based on the octane level such as unleaded (lowest octane fuel), super
(middle range octane fuel), or super-premium (highest octane fuel). High octane level in fuel
can withstand greater pressure inside the cylinder before igniting, therefore, prevents or resists
"knock".
One of the factors that causes smoke-belching in vehicles is wrong grade of fuel aside
from clogged air filter, emission system malfunction, incomplete combustion, engine
overheating, etc. Proper option of grade of fuel to use keeps engine running at maximum
environmental and economic efficiency.

• FIRE FIGHTING
In the event of a fire that can cause too much destruction to properties and even put lives
in danger, firefighters are aware of the extent of the harm that it may bring when it won't be
stopped immediately. They get surfaces near the fire zone wet before they reached there. One
basic method to extinguish the fire is to cool it with a liquid such as water to reduce the heat
or finally remove the fuel source. The spread of fire is then trapped and saves an area from
destruction.

• CORROSION PREVENTION
Chemical substances are used to coat metals to prevent corrosion. Rust forms when
metals are exposed to water and oxygen, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, impurities, air,
moisture, and electrolytes. To prevent rust formation, corrosion inhibitors such as
polyaniline/chitosan are implemented to slow down the oxidation process. These rust
inhibitors come in packages of coatings such as paint, sprays, etc.
Knowing reaction rates and the factors that may affect them gives us an understanding of
why a certain reaction happens and allows us to prevent something that should not occur.

In your understanding, why do you think the following are being practiced?

Ethene or ethylene gas is being used to ripen fruits faster.
