LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2

Factors Affecting Rate of the Chemical Reaction
Name of Learner: ______________________________________
Grade Level: 12____________________________________
Strand/Track: STEM-ACADEMIC_______________________
Section: ______________________________________
Date: ______________________________________

AS
A. Background Information for Learners
Hi! Today, you will learn about the various factors that influence the rate of the

G
Chemical reaction. There are many ways to increase or decrease the rate of a
chemical reaction. The chemical industries spend a lot of time and money studying
ways to manufacture products more easily. On the other hand, the food industry is

N
researching ways to slow down reactions that, in effect, will slow down spoilage.
The Effect of Temperature
TA
An increase in the temperature of a reaction
always causes the reactant particles to move
more rapidly. Therefore, heating the reactants
allows more frequent collisions among
particles.
BA

For example, consider the reaction of

hydrogen gas and nitrogen gas to form
Fig.1. An increase in temperature increases the ammonia gas. At room temperature, the rate
speed of the particles. This causes more of the reaction is so slow that no detectable
frequent and more successful collisions, thereby
increasing the rate of the reaction reaction occurs, even in the presence of an
iron catalyst. We need to heat the reaction to
O

about 4250C so the rate will be faster.

SD

A decrease in temperature slows down the rate of a reaction that’s why many foods
are kept fresh for months in the freezer.
The Effect of Concentration
Concentration refers to the number of particles
of a substance in a given volume. When the
concentration increases, the frequency of
collisions is increased and the reaction speeds
up.
For example, a lighted splinter of wood will
Fig.2. An increase in the concentration
increases the number of particles in a given
volume. This increases the frequency of
collisions thus, the rate of the reaction increases.

burn much more vigorously in pure oxygen than in air, which only has a 21 percent
concentration of oxygen.
The Effect of Particle Size
When solid reactants are present in very small
pieces, reaction rates can increase
considerably. The tinier pieces have greater

AS
surface area so they provide much greater
contact of the reactants and effect more
collisions.
For example, a piece of coal does not ignite
Fig.3. An increase in the state of subdivision very easily, but coal dust ignites explosively, a

G
provides for more contact between reactants,
thus more frequent collisions. This increases reaction that has led to many mining accidents.
the rate of the reaction.

The Effect of a Catalyst

AN
A catalyst is a substance that increases the
rate of chemical reaction without being used
up in the reaction. The catalyst may be
recovered unchanged at the end of the
T
process. For example, the decomposition of
KClO3 can be greatly accelerated by the
BA

addition of a small quantity of MnO2. In the

chemical equation, the catalyst is indicated Fig.4. Energy profiles of catalyzed and
over the arrow since its use does not affect the uncatalyzed pathways.

overall stoichiometry of the reaction.

O

In a catalysed reaction, the catalyst is actually consumed in one step and

SD

regenerated in a subsequent step; thus it is used over and over again without
undergoing any permanent change.
Many industrial processes depend upon catalytic procedures, but even more
important to humans are the natural catalysts known as enzymes. Enzymes are
biological catalysts that enable the chemical reactions in living organisms to proceed
enormously faster than they would in a test tube. For example, the enzyme pepsin
breaks down protein in the stomach.
