 Theory X (authoritarian management style) managers believe that

all people are fundamentally lazy and unless they are pushed to do
work, they will avoid doing any work. These managers dictate and
direct employees to work.

 Theory Y (participative management. style) managers believe that

individuals will do good work for the sake of doing it. They believe in
sharing information with the workers.

If your project team gets stuck in a problem with lots of unproductive
conflict, there are a number of things you can try. Your “ground rules”
should cover these five key areas of team operation:

 Team meetings

 Team working

 Team communication

 Team member relationships

 Team decision-making

The process of learning to work together effectively is known as team
development. Research has shown that teams go through definitive
stages during development. Bruce Tuckman, an educational

teams follow to become high performing.

High performance project teams can produce dramatic results
however like any other good thing there is a dark side to project
teams that managers need to be aware of.

Dr Nishtha Sharma June 18, 2022 14

1. Lack of trust
2. Conflict and tension
3. Lack of transparency
4. No long-term thinking
5. Badly perceived, not delivering
6. Poor change management
7. Not going in the same direction
8. Communication problem
9. Poor selection of team members
10. Lack of top management support

Dr Nishtha Sharma June 18, 2022 15

Virtual project management is the process by which one manages
projects via remote or virtual teams. When teams are distributed across
different time zones, they still need to get assigned tasks and that work
must be monitored and tracked to make sure it stays on schedule. As
more teams work from home, virtual project management has become
more defined.

Challenges:
 Developing trust
 Exchange of social information.
 Set clear roles for each team member.
Developing effective communication:
 Include face-to-face if at all possible.
 Keep team members informed on how the overall project is going.
 Don’t let team members vanish.
 Establish a code of conduct to avoid delays.
 Establish clear norms and protocols for surfacing assumptions and
conflicts.
 Multiple time zones
