CIV181 – MIDTERM QUIZ #2

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Write your solutions clearly on a clean white bond paper. Use ballpen (i.e. any
color) and do not use pencil.
2. Box your Final Answers with corresponding units.
3. Final Answer should be written with minimum of two decimal digits.
4. Solution should be saved and submitted in pdf format.

1. Gate AB in figure below is 16 ft long and 8 ft wide. Neglecting the weight of the gate,
compute the water level h for which the gate will start to fall. (20 pts)

2. The inclined manometer in Figure 2 contains Meriam red manometer oil (sg = 0.827).
Assume that the reservoir is very large. What should be the angle ϴ be if each inch along
the scale is to represent a change of 0.8 psf in gage pressure PA? (5 pts)

3. Find the net hydrostatic force per unit width on
rectangular panel AB in Figure 3 and determine its line of
action from point B. (20 pts)

4. (30 points) A concrete dam Figure 3

retaining water is shown in
Figure 4. If the specific
weight of the concrete is 150
lb/ft3, find the factor of safety
against sliding, the factor of
safety against overturning,
and the pressure intensity on
the base in kip/ft2. Assume
that the foundation soil is
impermeable and the
coefficient of friction between
dam and the foundation soil
is 0.45.

5. (20 points) A dam has a parabolic shape as

shown in the figure E2.7a with xo = 10 ft and zo=
24 ft. The fluid is water and atmospheric
pressure may be omitted. Compute the
resultant force acting on the dam and the
position or location of CP where they act. The
width of the dam is 50 ft.

6. (5 points) If the kinematic viscosity of oil is 800

centistokes and its relative density is 1.13, what
is its viscosity in Pa-sec?
