Five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians
had a great civilization along the River Nile in the
north of Africa. It was a very fertile area, so the
Egyptians produced a lot of grain, which they used
to make bread. They exported fruit, salt and grain
to other countries in the region in exchange for
exotic goods which they didn’t have. For example,
Egypt had wood from Syria, because Egyptian trees
weren’t good enough for making ships. Greece
provided Egypt with wine to drink, silver for
making jewellery, and olive oil, which they used
to cook food. Cyprus provided the country with
copper, an expensive metal which they used to attacked and robbed ships which were carrying
