Unit 3 : Newton’s third law of motion : Law of Interaction

1.____________ is a push or a pull .

2.____________ One force is called the?

3.___________ One force that can be explained using Newton’s 3 rd law is?

4.___________ , one action and the other reaction that make up the interaction. These reaction forces
are created by ?

.5.___________ forces can cancel whether they are equal and act in opposite direction on the same
object. Even though action and reaction forces are equal, and oppositely directed, they don’t cancel
each other when they are acting on different objects.

6.____________ you exert a force on the floor and the floor exerts an equal and opposite force on your
foot pushing you forward.

7.____________ hot gases are pushed out the bottom of the rocket , the gases push upward on the
rocket with the same force , accelerating the rocket so that it can escape the earth’s gravitational field.

8.___________ two persons of roughly equal mass stand next to each other on an ice skating rink. When
one person pushes the other, both skaters will move away from each other without the other pushing
back.

9.___________ usually stretching on a string, rope or cable. Perhaps you have heard of power lines
being called high tension wires.

10.__________ The topic of the this quiz.

tension wires.

1. Walking : as you walk across the floor , you exert a force on the floor and the floor exerts an
equal and opposite force on your foot pushing you forward. If there is no reaction force, your
foot would go through the floor.
Rocket propulsion : as hot gases are pushed out the bottom of the rocket , the gases push
upward on the rocket with the same force , accelerating the rocket so that it can escape the
earth’s gravitational field.
Ice skating activity : two persons of roughly equal mass stand next to each other on an ice
skating rink. When one person pushes the other, both skaters will move away from each other
without the other pushing back. Why? Based on Newton’s 3rd law, the action or push of the first
skater, will cause an equal reaction or force opposite to that.. so boht skaters will be pushed
back.
2. One force is called the action force , and the other the reaction force . It doesn’t matter which
force we call action and which we call reaction. They are equal in strength and opposite in
direction . Newton’s 3rd law can also be stated : For every action, there is an equal and
opposite reaction. For every interaction, the forces always occur in pairs. The action and
reaction pair of forces make up the interaction between two things.
