may be to improve the quality of advertising or user experience. However, many customers were
unpleasantly surprised by this.
This situation is not just horrible and invasive. Worse, efforts to automatically identify gender —
using algorithms to guess a person's gender based on images, video, or audio — cause significant
social and ethical issues that have not yet been fully explored. Most current research on automated
gender recognition technologies focuses on technological details.
Our recent study found that people with diverse gender identities, including those who identify as
transgender or non-gender, are particularly concerned that these systems may divide them. People
who express their gender differences differently from stereotypical male and female norms already
experience discrimination and harm due to misclassification or misunderstanding. Ideally,
technology developers should develop systems to make these problems less common, nothing
more.
As digital technologies become more powerful and complex, their designers are trying to use them
to identify and classify complex human characteristics such as sexual orientation, gender, and
ethnicity. The idea is that with enough training on a large amount of user data, algorithms can learn
to analyze people's appearance and behavior, and may one day characterize people as well, or even
better, than other people.
Our results demonstrate how designers of automatic categorization technologies can inadvertently
cause harm by making assumptions about the simplicity and predictability of human characteristics.
Our study adds to the growing body of work that seeks to more gender mainstreaming into
technology.
Historically, minorities have been excluded from talking about large-scale technology deployments,
including ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. However, both scientists and designers
know that the inclusion of information from minorities in the design process can lead to technical
innovations that benefit all people. We are in favor of a more gender-inclusive and human-oriented
approach to automation, which includes different perspectives.
With the development of digital technologies, they can lead to impressive innovations. But because
people direct this work, they must avoid exacerbating human prejudices and prejudices that are
negative and restrictive. In the case of automatic gender recognition, we do not necessarily
conclude that these algorithms should be abandoned. Most likely, the developers of these systems
must include the diversity and complexity of human identity and be sensitive to them.
