PROJECT: BANGON
“Bigyan Ng Pagasa Ang Mga Katutubo Sa Bayang Kanilang Sinilangan”

INTRODUCTION

Summary:

The focal point of this advocacy is about the environmental issues that

affect Aetas, who were experiencing a crisis of losing their home and livelihood

due to not enough protection and recognition by the Philippine government.

This project aims to raise the situation and encourage people to become

volunteers who support the marginalized group. The medium to convey this

campaign is an infomercial that aims to reach different people to spread

awareness and knowledge and motivate them to help the indigenous people.
Background:

Our chosen advocacy is about the environment, which focuses on the

indigenous people who are the Aeta and how environmental changes affected

their lives. The advocacy campaign will be entitled “Project: BANGON” which

aims to help the Aetas who have lost their homes and their livelihood. Our vision

is to inspire other people in aiding the Aetas, to help create a better future for

them. “Project: BANGON” also seeks to spread awareness about the negative

effects of modernization. The Tarlac Aeta are one of several indigenous groups

under threat since Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016. Further examination

reveals that the use of brutal dispersals against indigenous protesters is,

unfortunately, evident. Dispersals happened for two reasons: one, a land issue,

and two, social discrimination. Although non-governmental organizations (NGOs)

have worked hard to secure the Aetas' subsistence by establishing livelihood

programs that allow them to earn money for their food, the Aetas only want

farmland for their subsistence.

Rationale:

Aetas are indigenous people who live in isolated mountainous parts of

Luzon Philippines, and they are one of the earliest inhabitants of the country

(Aeta Tribe, n.d). Indigenous people created more of the world’s agricultural
biodiversity. Generally, their voices and concerns are not heard enough to

provide them the care and protection that they deserve in their own territory.

This advocacy will take advantage of the constant modernization, to save the

Aeta’s homelands, culture, knowledge systems, and identities from extinction.

Aside from that, this advocacy will help to reach other members of the society

to fight for the human rights and territory of the Indigenous people that are

forced to move out of their own homelands for other human activity purposes

that affect their livelihood. Lastly, this is a project that will give a big amount of

help to preserving the environment that is continuously collapsing as a result of

different human activities. Good governance and protection to the Aetas will

continue to maintain 80% of the country’s remaining biodiversity (Duchicela,

2017).

DISCUSSION

The team deliberated on the most effective, yet feasible, programs that

could be implemented given the current situation and the resources we

currently have at our disposal. The following texts are to be utilized to further

the advocacy’s cause:

Social Media Page

This will be the collective and main source of our digital informative

materials. Our social media page will aid in solidifying the image of our

advocacy and promote users’ ease of navigation through our media.

Infomercials

We will be administering information through an infomercial. It is a form

of advertisement which aims to educate the audience about a particular

subject, engaging and inviting them to participate. Our lead editor, Jam Achurra,

will be tasked to spearhead the editing process.

Social Media Posts

When used to supplement advocacy efforts, social media can help by

spreading information about a cause, reinforcing relationships among

supporters, encouraging participatory dialogue between group leaders and

supporters, and strengthening collective action through faster collaborative

communication. Furthermore, these tools are extremely cost-effective, allowing

advocacy organizations to accomplish more with less (Brunson & Valentine,

2010; Orbar, Zube, & Lampe, 2012). We will be focusing on making digital

posters and corresponding informative captions/descriptions. The whole team

will collaborate on the composition of said posters and captions.

CONCLUSION:

Aetas, like other indigenous tribes in the Philippines, are among the

country's most marginalized. Their homes are frequently destroyed as a result

of illicit logging, mining, and slash-and-burn farming. As a result of these

circumstances, they have been compelled to relocate and forsake their

ancestral lands. These are clear violations of human rights, moral standards,

and just basic human decency. We chose to do something about it.

The team is composed of architecture students that are rather versed in

creating artistic designs. The members have sufficient experience when it

comes to making both manual and digital artworks—others more than most.

Their specializations range over more than static projects, which include

producing videos and organizing online live performances. With the

aforementioned individual aptitudes, along with the team members’

experience with such tasks, they can objectively be described to be capable and

adaptive when it comes to constructively and productively propagating

informative material.

Because of ongoing restrictions, we resorted to digital means of

administering activities, mainly through social media posts. This way, we can

disseminate highly accessible information promptly and efficiently. We found an

actual way to channel our concerns into action. Leaving these people behind

would be a violation of humanitarian values and can effectively jeopardize

attempts to eradicate discrimination, segregation, and exploitation. Even by just

the viewers’ simple act of acknowledging the administered information, we’re

steps closer to our vision.
