EARTH SCIENCE 11

The
Water
Cycle
Group 6
Objectives

1. To define what the Water Cycle is

2. To clearly understand each step
and process of the water cycle and
the water cycle as a whole
3. To determine the role of the
Water Cycle in supporting life on
Earth.

How do we not run out of water

even though we use it daily? How
do rain and storms keep on coming
even though a lot of water have
already been evicted? Let's find
out!
The water cycle describes how
water evaporates from the earth's
surface, rises into the atmosphere,
cools and condenses into rain or
snow in clouds, and falls again to the
surface as precipitation.

1. Evaporation

Main factors affecting evaporation are temperature,

humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation.

The principal source of water vapor is the oceans, but

evaporation also occurs in soils, snow, and ice.
Evaporation from snow and ice, the direct conversion
from solid to vapor, is known as sublimation

2. Transpiration

Transpiration is the process of water vapor being

released from plants and soil. This is when moisture is
carried through plants from roots to soil. Plants
release water vapor through microscopic pores
called Stomata. Plant transpiration is pretty much
an invisible process, since the water is evaporating
from the leaf surfaces, you don't just go out and
see the leaves "sweating".

two ways: satu tion can happe
ration or cooli n in
ng to the dew
point.

In saturation, condensation can occur if the air

becomes so saturated with water vapor
molecules that it cannot hold any liquid.

Condensation can also occur if water vapor has

cooled to the dew point or the temperature at
which water vapor turns to liquid.

4. Precipitation

Precipitation is a vital component of how water

moves through Earth’s water cycle, connecting the
ocean, land, and atmosphere. When a cloud becomes full
of liquid water, it falls from the sky as rain or snow—
also known as precipitation. Rain and snow then fill
lakes and streams, and the process starts all over
again. Precipitation is one of many ways water is
cycled from the atmosphere to the earth or ocean.

Trivias about
Precipitation

Most rain starts as snow high in the clouds and as

they drop through warmer air, they become
raindrops.
Fog and mist are not precipitation. They are water
that is suspended in the atmosphere.
Raindrops are not in the shape of a teardrop. Small
raindrops are 1 millimeter in width and almost
spherical. Bigger raindrops are akin to a parachute.

The Role and Significance
of the Water Cycle

Water is a very important liquid

substance that is a vital part of any
living organism. The water cycle’s
role is to maintain water itself,
water is needed for plants, living
animals and us humans to function.
