Franz and Anna Maria Wallboom and the eldest among seven children.

umbrellas to supplement the family income.
- Cared for the sick, the old, and the dying of the village. She had acquired a deep insight
into persons who were suffering in mind and body by being with them and by attending
to their needs. Through this apostolate, she obtained a sense of lasting values for life,
which led her to become a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, when she was 19.
This prepared Mother Josepha well for her future mission.

- Her father's apprentice Lambert Welbers who was in the Steyl Mission Seminary and
whom she had helped financially for his studies, led her to the mission house in Steyl.
- On February 12th 1884 she joined the maids of the mission Seminary. She prayed a
great deal with the other maids as they worked. She was very concerned to have a good
atmosphere in the community and at work. She loved peace, harmony, silence and
serenity. Love of prayer characterized Hendrina so much that the Sisters of Providence
nicknamed her "the praying auntie". In December 1888, Hendrina replaced Helena, her
companion as superior.
- In March 1895, St. Arnold appointed Mother Josepha as Postulant Directress. Because
of her happy disposition and engaging nature, Mother Joseph was chosen to prepare the
