The selection of an electric motor drive depends
primarily on the conditions under which it has to
operate and the type of load it has to handle.
The main guiding factors for such selection are as
follows:
1) Electrical characteristics:
* Starting characteristics
e Running characteristics
* Speed control (Speed of driving and driven
machines)
¢ Braking
2) Mechanical considerations:
* Type of enclosure
* Type of bearings
« Method of power transmission
* Type of cooling
* Noise level
* Space requirement
3) Size and rating of motors:
« Requirement for a continuous, intermittent, or
variable load cycle
* Overload capacity
4) Cost:
* Capital cost
« Running cost
Hence,
The temperature of the drive is not a factor while
selecting a drive.1. Which braking method is the best method for
obtaining high braking torque?
a) Regenerative braking
b) Plugging
c) Dynamic braking
d) Rheostatic braking {
* View Answer
Answer: b
Explanation: Plugging is the best braking method
among all braking techniques. In plugging the
value of the armature current reverses and the
mechanical energy is extracted. A very high
braking torque is produced in case of plugging.\9
Starters are used to protect DC motors from
damage that can be caused by very high
current and torque during startup. They do this
by providing external resistance to the motor,
which is connected in series to the motor's
armature winding and restricts the current to
an acceptable level.
