SELECTION OF POWER RATING OF MOTORS From the point of view of motor rating for various duty cycles in section 1.6 can be broadly classified as: v Continuous duty and constant load v Continuous duty and variable load 2 v Short time rating Load torques which always oppose the motion and change their sign on the reversal of motion are called passive load torques ° % u Torque due to friction, cutting etc. forward forward braking motoring A see et Fig22 Mutiqninetpetont ives In addition to saving energy, regenerative braking also Te SCC Cee hice nC On ieanatdekcTats accelerate simultaneously during peak hours. see ieee ee In regenerative braking, when the electric tram or train is going downhill, DU ue RU ee OR my Se UCU ee Cu ec ie ie Qh oh es biaial 2 | et } vind | ; - ail | eee | aa ahich ig -roechenically ba a Aad , ne oill seo de toPow's : ‘cs ~The spead comely tab coreg nt , TP" oe | Gyenoral_ dnive oqueptn : ey | tals ee. rN Mo rete ) pal b= (Al) Re | Ait % i i x A a al IER Aes . i ‘ian akzayn Anh \ yon Slaw (olor —torqve s couvlae Da Pow ed On si Cc . _ . ¥ a be 5 MISC Cre SR eR ares A Dynamic braking reduces wear on friction-based braking components, and regeneration lowers net Ca Ue Le Rue oly Te Pee MT ace eM eRe et electric trams, trolleybuses, and electric and hybrid electric automobiles. concept of motor duty class is introduced and on the basis of this duty cycles of the motor can be divided in eight categories such as . Continuous duty . Short time duty . Intermittent periodic duty Pore . Intermittent periodic duty with starting 5. Intermittent periodic duty with starting and braking 6. Continuous duty with intermittent periodic loading 7. Continuous duty with starting and braking 8. Continuous duty with periodic speed changes The motor acts as a generator and the energy tries to store itself in the DC bus. This energy must be dissipated; AME MUR NAT MIRC leu Kem ats DC bus. The braking time is directly related to the resistor eT The motor temperature reaches steady state and it depends on power loss, which intern depends on the output power of the machine; and this dependence of temperature rise on output power which is taken as thermal loading on the machine. @rewegawt@te al) pabiece An additional resistance is also connected in series with RUBRIC ROM M UR Rel cna CORR CRE Since the machine operates as a separately excited generator, the braking characteristics will be same as those for de shunt motor during dynamic braking. Sau ad eae) Sel f Electrical Dri The selection of an electric motor drive depends primarily on the conditions under which it has to operate and the type of load it has to handle. The main guiding factors for such selection are as follows: 1) Electrical characteristics: * Starting characteristics e Running characteristics * Speed control (Speed of driving and driven machines) ¢ Braking 2) Mechanical considerations: * Type of enclosure * Type of bearings « Method of power transmission * Type of cooling * Noise level * Space requirement 3) Size and rating of motors: « Requirement for a continuous, intermittent, or variable load cycle * Overload capacity 4) Cost: * Capital cost « Running cost Hence, The temperature of the drive is not a factor while selecting a drive. 1. Which braking method is the best method for obtaining high braking torque? a) Regenerative braking b) Plugging c) Dynamic braking d) Rheostatic braking { * View Answer Answer: b Explanation: Plugging is the best braking method among all braking techniques. In plugging the value of the armature current reverses and the mechanical energy is extracted. A very high braking torque is produced in case of plugging. \9 Starters are used to protect DC motors from damage that can be caused by very high current and torque during startup. They do this by providing external resistance to the motor, which is connected in series to the motor's armature winding and restricts the current to an acceptable level.
