4 THE AUXILIARY “DID”

We know that all questions and negatives in the present tense are made with
DO or DOES. The only exception is the verb TO BE (am, is, are). We know also
that the past of DO is DID.
It is logical, therefore, that all questions and negatives in the past tense are
made with the auxiliary DID. Again, the only exception is the verb TO BE (was,
were). Remember that all auxiliaries are always followed by the simple form
of the principal verb.

EXAMPLES:
DID he GO to Detroit?
Yes, He WENT to Detroit
No, he DIDN´T GO to Detroit.

DID she HAVE a notebook?

Yes,She HAD a notebook.
No, she DIDN’T HAVE a notebook.

DID she WASH the dirty clothes?

Yes,She WASHED the dirty clothes
No, she DIDN´T WASH the dirty clothes.

DID they STUDY the lesson together?

Yes,They STUDIED the lesson together
No, they DIDN´T STUDY the lesson together.
