SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION ABOUT SLAUGHTER AND MAY 164
FOREWORD

Dear Students,

In this Directory, you will find valuable recently-updated career information relating to the legal
profession in Hong Kong, replacing the 2013/14 Directory. The legal practices who have
responded to our questionnaire have supplied information on the nature of their practices, the
internship and placement opportunities available, the criteria required for selection, the
application process and deadlines, and the remuneration packages offered.

We have also included information about a number of the larger law firms who have not
responded to our questionnaire but which are likely to have vacation placement and other
recruitment opportunities available.

I would also like to take this opportunity to urge all of you to make full use of the career-related
services available on the Faculty’s now-revamped Virtual Careers Resource Centre (VCRC), to
attend the careers seminars and to take part in the other careers events advertised on the VCRC
from time to time.

Our goal is to provide top level career support and information to enable you to plan your
journey into the profession. Your participation in these events and use of these resources is the
best indication to us that you are finding our efforts worthwhile.

Good luck with your applications!

Paul Mitchard QC
Legal Careers Director

HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS
I. About our Recruitment Programme(s):
Our two-year training contract is unique in its ability to offer you a wealth and breadth of choice, without
compromising on quality.

All trainees complete four six-month seats, spending one seat in corporate and at least one seat in dispute
resolution. We also offer seats in specialist areas such as finance; employment; energy; corporate crime and
investigations; private wealth and international arbitration.

In addition, we encourage you to spend six months in one of our international offices or on secondment with
one of our clients.

From day one, you will have direct contact with clients. This hands-on experience will help you to
understand the legal and commercial context of the advice we give. Shortly after joining us, you will have
the chance to discuss your seat choices on a one-to-one basis with our HR team. This allows us to offer you a
training contract tailored to your particular career aspirations. It also allows you to make your mind up as
you progress as you may change your mind on preferences once you join.

JONES DAY
I. About our Recruitment Programme(s):
Jones Day offers a training experience that is different from those of all the other major law firms in Hong
Kong. Our trainee solicitor system combines the advantages of a flexible nonrotational system with the
benefits of a structured rotational programme.

During your first year with us, you will rotate through different practice seats in order to gain solid
exposure to both contentious and noncontentious matters.

The final 12 months of your training contract, you will have the opportunity to work with the practices of
your choice so that you can decide which area interests you the most. During this time, we will work closely
with you to help you transition to the practice that you may eventually join as an associate.

This system is designed to ensure that you develop strong legal skills and, at the same time, to equip you
with the experience and knowledge necessary to become a technically astute and commercially savvy lawyer
upon your admission as a solicitor.
