my effort to make a depth study. I was assigned to pursue internship on “Impact of just in time
manufacturing of embroidery department” of Pacific Jeans Limited. There are some differences
between theories and practice. Due to complete the report, the employee who associated with
production line they help me to complete the report by providing various information. From
them learn much practical activity.
In Bangladesh the RMG sector plays a significant role in boosting the economy of the country
and Pacific Jeans ltd. is recognized as one of the reputed Private Garments Company of the
country. Pacific Jeans Ltd. started its journey in 1984 at patharghata fisherighat with the small

first fiscal year, The amounts of exports were only one and half million dollars. Now about thirty

Chapter 1
Introduction

Bangladesh is in the 7th position EU in exporting Ready made Garments(RMG). The following
report is prepared on Pacific Jeans Ltd. which is the largest among locally invested garments.
And this is the second largest among all garments in Bangladesh. The main objective of the
study is to evaluate the just in time manufacturing of embroidery department of pacific jeans ltd.
As a partial requirement of MBA program I need to go for internship to gather practical
experience and need to submit the report regarding that practical knowledge. This report is
originated after completing the MBA program from Department of Business Administration
under Premier University Chittagong. This report is the outcome of the assigned internship,
suggested by the supervisor, Mrs. Rahima Begum of Business Administration, Premier
University Chittagong.

1.1 Background of Report

Garments sector is one of the important export sectors of our country. Today readymade
garments sector not only earn maximum foreign currency but also engage a lot of unemployed
people in productive industry. For this industry, various bank and insurance business are now in
better position, transportation business now expanded in the country, shipping business is
increasing inside and outside the country, cargo handling, clearing and forwarding business,
buying house, hotel, tourist–all this sectors found possibility of their business by this readymade
garments export. There are more than 18 lucks people engaged in this sector. So their purchasing
powers increases and a group of consumer also created by this sector. More than 8 lucks people
are engaged in different accessories industry to earn their money. As a result our unemployment
reduces beside our socio-economic position also developed. It is true that, for bright future of
Bangladesh the contribution of this sector cannot be neglected. But now a day there are some
internal socio- political problems and for international depression there is a possibility to reduce
our export. We have to carefully assess our internal problem and try to overcome this problem as
early as possible. Otherwise we fail to attract foreign buyers for export from our country. Before
2005 multi fibber agreement (MFA) limit us specific export but after 2005 our export increases
in different new country including previous country.

1.4 Methodology of the Report

Methodology is a very vital part prior to preparing a report as it guides the whole process starting
from collection of data, processing of data and organization of data into information which can
be analyzed and interpreted for achieving the primary objective of the report. For preparing my
internship report I have used both primary and secondary resource. For the implementation of the
study I have worked on “Pacific Jeans ltd”. In order to make the Report more meaningful and
presentable, two sources of data and information have been used widely.

9
1.5 Source of Data:
Primary Sources:
 Face-to-face conversation with the respective Executives & Officers of the Gatments.
 Informal conversation with the clients.
 Practical work exposures form the different desks of the various departments of the firm
covered.
 Relevant file study as provided by the officers concerned.

Secondary Sources of data:

 Annual Reports of Pacific Jeans Limited.
 Periodicals published by BGMEA.
 Various books, articles, compilations etc. Regarding JIT manufacturing functions, export
operations and credit policies.
 After collection of data, a list of table was prepared on the basis of aims and objectives of
the study and processing, editing and coding of the data were done simultaneously.

1.6 Limitations:
There are some limitations in our study. We faced some problem during this study two months is
not enough to know about full JIT manufacturing operations. Definitely I couldn’t produce an
outstanding report for the time limitations. Those limiting factors that hampered my swish
working in garments and eventually in making ready this report area unit as following:

Lack of Time: The time period for preparing this report is very short. I had very short time in
my hand to complete this report which is not enough to know details about an organization like
Pacific Jeans Limited.

Other Limitations: The other limitations are as follows:

10
 The Executives of the garments could not give adequate time because of their own work.
The main constraint of the study is insufficiency of current information, relevant to the
study.
 All the interpretation and conclusion about the result of the study is based on the analyst
own perspective.
 It was very difficult to collect data and information from supply chain and production
department of Pacific Jeans Limited on the excuse on the confidentiality of the
information.
 Lack of experience in internship report writing.

Chapter 3
JIT Manufacturing of embroidery department of Pacific Jeans Limited

3.1 Just in Time Manufacturing :

JIT is a Japanese management philosophy, which has been applied in practice since the early
1970s in many Japanese manufacturing organizations. It was first developed and perfected
within the Toyota manufacturing plants by Taiichi Ohno as a means of meeting consumer
demands with minimum delays. Taiichi Ohno is frequently referred to as the father of JIT
(Cheng and Podolsky, 1993). The idea of JIT is very simple: “producing the necessary items, in
the necessary quantities at the necessary time” (Monden, 1993). Under different names,
including Toyota Production System (Monden, 1993), Lean Production (Womack et al.,
1991), Zero Inventory, the Stock Less Production System (Hall, 1983) and World Class
Manufacturing (Schonberger, 1986), JIT manufacturing systems have been developed with
various techniques to support the basic principle.
Managers now-a-days have learned that cherished ways of doing business do not work any
more and that major changes must be made in how organizations are managed. It is necessary to
have an appreciation of the ways in which organizations are transforming themselves to become
more competitive. The last two decades have been a period of tremendous upheaval and change
in the business environment. Competition in many industries has become worldwide in
scope, and the pace of innovation in products and services has accelerated. This has been good
news for customers, since intensified competition has generally led to lower prices, higher
quality, and more choices. Since the early 1980s, many companies have gone through several
waves of improvement programs, starting with Just-in-Time (JIT) and passing on to Total
Quality Management (TQM), Lean production, Six Sigma, Process Reengineering, Theory
of Constraints (TOC), and so on. When properly implemented, these improvement programs can
enhance quality, reduce cost, increase output, eliminate delays in responding to customers, and
ultimately increase profits (Garrison and Noreen 2003). Bangladesh as one of the developing
countries has already experienced many sophisticated and technological advancements in
recent years. Many manufacturing concerns are producing their products in the Export
Processing Zone (EPZ). EPZ is treated as the right action taken towards industrialization.

17
3.2 Just In Time Environment of Pacific Jeans:
 The embroidery department doing all the embroidery work for all 5 sub factory of pacific
jeans group
 Process flexibility – Machinery of the embroidery department are flexible so no matter
how much volume or lot product order by buyer it won’t delay the timeline. This
department have many relatively in expensive general purpose machine than one large.
 Total quality management – after the finishing of the embroidery each and every piece of
garment check by the QC department. If they found fault in any product immediately
send back to the production line for repairing.
 Total productive maintenance – This helps to preventive maintenance plus continuous
efforts to adapt modify and refine equipment to increase flexibility reduce materials
handling and promotes continues flow.
 Uninterrupted Flow- This embroidery department has a organized work flow , so that raw
materials can easily pass from one work station to another.
 Total Employee Involvement – It involves the employee of 3 departments, they are-
Production ,qc and delivery.

At first five other factories of pacific jeans send their immediate needed garments to the
embroidery department. Delivery department delivery the unfinished garments to the production
department . And then production department serial the unfinished garments according to size
and send to the machine operator for the embroidery After that QC stuff check either the
embroidery is ok or not. If not ,then those products will send back for repair. After that
production department give those finished products to delivery department. And then delivery
department send those product back to 5 sub factories.

Chapter Four
Job Responsibilities

Process of Embroidery in Apparel Manufacturing Industry:

All the processes of embroidery have presented below:

 Embroidery is a decorative stitch that is placed on the garment to enhance its

properties or advertise the brand of the garment.
 Some styles need the pocket, front, or sleeve to be embroidered. It is the
embroidery section supervisor’s responsibility to get the correct embroidery disk
or tape from the production coordinator.
 This tape is placed on the machine and the machine is set up to run 20
embroideries at once based on machine capacity.
 The supervisor will adjust the machine speed so that it is suitable for the different
fabric and embroidery types.
 The approved standard will be hanging with the machine and follow according to
style.
 When the embroidery operation is completed in the embroidery section then all
the pieces are checked 100% through the needle detector machine and send to the
cutting section.
 Finally cutting section will include all the parts together and deliver to the sewing
line.
 The cutting quality inspector must check each cut received from embroidery
100% for its quality and quantity.
 Cutting in-charge has to follow the bundled chart and ensure the entire cut
received is as per its Quantity and number sequence.
 Any panel is to be returned in the embroidery section for rectifying should be
noted down in this report and should ensure that each panel will be returned to
each bundle after correction or replacement.

20
 Q.A (Quality assurance) Manager and Cutting in-charge must ensure each bundle
which is going to be issued to the sewing line will be 100% correct and acceptable
with quantity too.
 Full responsibility delegated to the embroidery section or plant about standard
quality and each panel must be check for quality point advised by the QC (Quality
Controller) and its Quality Manager. QC has to submit this report to the QA
Manager on daily basis.
 Before sewing line input, Q. I (Quality in-charge) will check each bundle which is
going to be passed through the metal detector machine, also will be 100% correct
and acceptable with quantity.

Embroidery QC Check:
After adjusting the machine in the embroidery section, the supervisor will check some
samples to ensure that the machine is set up correctly. The embroidery operator will get
the Q.C’s approval before the bulk production. The Q.C inspector will inspect the pieces
in a bundle randomly. If they find one or more defects out of the pieces they inspect then
the entire bundle will be rejected. If they find no defects in the bundle then the bundle
will be released for the next process. Then inspection procedure is the same as the in-line
Q.C system.

Responsible for QC Check:

Embroidery In-charge/Supervisor/Cutting Q.C. /Q.I.

Purpose of Embroidery QC Check:

To ensure that the embroidery production is going to be acceptable to proceed with
metal-free cut parts to the sewing line to minimize and control garment quantity and
minimize garment rejection due to embroidery mistakes.

21
Outcome:

 The entire cut which is going to be produced will be without embroidery

mistakes.
 Minimize garments rejection due to embroidery defects.
 This metal detection procedure will ensure product safety, legality, and quality.

22
CHAPTER FIVE
Role Of Just In Time Manufacturing In Supply Chain Management

Just-In-Time strategy is defined as a combination of accomplished activities in an

organization that includes just-in-time manufacturing, just-in-time purchase, just in time
sell and just in time information
that the aim of all these components is omitting wastage in an organization and better
usage of the resources all over supply chain. Total just in time is adopted with the aim of
operating out the manufacturing organizations in total supply chain management…. both
in a direct and indirect way, through competences relevant to accomplishable chain (Hunt
et al., 1999).Using just-in-time manufacturing systems for effecting on supply chain
involves developing just in time purchases and sales. Those activities are concentrated at
developing and reinforcing these integrated mechanisms, have defined direct supply
chain as a central organization that is in relation to first grade communications between
supplier and customer. In this regard, Kenneth et al. started to review the relation
between supply chain management strategies and total just-in-time manufacturing and
found that there are positive and significant relations between them (Kenneth et al.,
2014). In addition, (Horriet al.,2015) discovered positive and significant relations
between supply chain management strategies and Specialty Journal of Knowledge
Management, 2017, Vol, 2 (1): 8-19 just-in-time manufacturing and the results of their
study were acknowledged by the investigation by (Ebrahimian et al., 2015). The
conceptual model for the study will be as follows:

23
CHAPTER SIX
Problem And Recommendation

Problems:
 Machine operator have to set the machine according to embroidery size of the
new lot ,which is time consuming.
 Majority numbers of machines are from past generation that’s why its takes more
time for manufacturing.
 Unskilled new machine operator and helper make mistakes which hampered the
manufacturing flow.
 Sometimes there is no day off in week .
 In winter higher air condition system for cooling the machine causes problem for
the worker.

Recommendations:
 If the production department scheduled which goods will processing in which
machinery unit so that the machine operator can ready the machine in advance.
 Adding new machine will reduce production time.
 New machin operator and helper should be monitoring by experienced individual.
 The management should provide warm uniform for the workers in winter season

Chapter Seven
24
Conclusion

I have completed my industrial attachment successfully by the grace of Allah. Internship in a

factory is an important and essential part of education as through this I learn all the
implementation of the process which I have studied theoretically. It gives me the opportunity to
compare theoretical knowledge with practical facts and thus develop my knowledge and skills. .
If the Company follows the recommendations made in this report, I believe that it can overcome
the present problem. And in the long run the company will be benefited and it may become the
market leader inner future. There is no doubt that Pacific Jeans has created a good reputation in
the market by its quality product and service. It should maintain the quality and try to diverse its
business.
