1.09 Knitting
Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth or other fine crafts. Knitting consists
of consecutive loops, called stitches. As each row progresses, a new loop is pulled through an existing
loop. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them. This process
eventually results in a final product, often a garment.

After weaving, the most prevalent method of fabric construction is knitting. The yarn in knitted fabrics
follows a meandering path, forming symmetric loops or stitches. When the interlocking loops run
lengthwise, each row is called a wale. A wale can be compared with the warp in weaving. When the loops

16 | P a g e
run across the fabric, each row is called a course. A course corresponds to the filling, or weft. There are
two major varieties of knitting: weft knitting and warp knitting.

In weft knitting, one continuous yarn forms courses across the fabric. In warp knitting, a series of yarns
form Wales in the lengthwise direction of the fabric.

Knitting may be done by hand or by machine. By hand, numerous styles and methods of knitting exist.

CHAPTER 03: CRITICAL ASSESMENT OF INTERNSHIP
WORK

26 | P a g e
3.1 Generic Courses Applications
1. HR Skills & Leadership

After the tenor of three month internship program I had experienced leadership quality in Divine Textile
Lmt. I learnt some qualities of effective leadership such as personal drive & energy, desire to lead, honesty
& integrity, self-confidence, analytical ability, business knowledge, charisma, creativity & originality,
flexibility &addictiveness, personal warmth etc. I also learnt some negative traits that could create an
unhealthy environment for achieving company's performance. I had learnt four focuses of a caring leader
such as:

Customers Welfare: This will help a leader to anticipate their needs & providing state-of-the-art products.

Employees Welfare: It works for providing a healthy work environment, treating them with fairness, and
helping them achieve their professional potential.

Shareholders Welfare: It helps leaders maintaining a strong growth rate and return on investment.

Community Welfare: It ensures exemplifying the highest standards of ethical behavior and contributing
to the well-being of society.

2. Business Operations
There are three basic functions in every company. These are operation, marketing and finance. Operations
is one of them which plays a vital role for any type of business to achieve its business success. Business
Operation Management manages the productivity of business to ensure economic growth and development
in the company. Operation is the work of managing the inner workings of a business so it runs as
efficiently as possible. The owner of a company has to oversee the management and design of the
background work whether he makes products, sells or provide services to the customers. The outcome of
business operations of DTL is the harvesting of value from assets owned by a business. Assets can be
either physical or intangible. Operation Management has a very important role to improve the overall
performance and productivity (the ratio of input to output is termed as productivity) in DTL. Operation
management plays a crucial role in DTL as it handles issues like design, operations, and maintenance of
the system used for the production of goods.

3. Analytical Skills
Analytical skills help a manager to think out of the box and take the right decision quickly. Analytical
skills in management are often defined as the ability to break problems into parts to see relationships or
interdependencies. Managers having strong analytical ability can lead and plan projects successfully. They

27 | P a g e
can accurately forecast the probable results, develop plans and execute them to meet the desired goals and
objectives. During my internship, I had experienced analytical skills and competencies using both soft and
hard elements of the company. I learnt how to use excel to calculate and show company's financial
performance. There are some statistical analysis that can help us to take the right decision at the right time.
I have also experienced mathematical calculations and uses there.

Needle Mark: The main cause is use of faulty needle in the machine.

Hole Mark: The causes are higher GSM, sinker buckling and needle latch buckling.

Star mark: The causes are yarn tension variation at the time of production, Low GSM and needle latch
buckling.

Sinker Mark: The main cause is the use of faulty sinker in the machine.

Fabric Shrinkage: The causes are yarn twist, fabric GSM, GSM shrinkage, shrinkage of twist and knitting
tension.

3. Merchandising and Production Management

Merchandiser Qualities
Costing Knowledge (of raw materials)

Order Getting Capacity: This quality helps a merchandiser to negotiate perfectly with the buyer if he
knows the costing of raw materials better. In this method, the possibility of getting order from the buyers
will be higher.

Responsive & Sincere

Hard Worker Language Skill (Communication Skill)

Marketing Skill (Influencing Skill)

Computer Skill (Soft Skill)

Collection of Order

30 | P a g e
Order Collection is the main task in a garment factory. Usually DTL collects order from different buying
houses. Sometimes the managing director visits different countries such as Germany, England, and France
to collect order for the company.

Buyer Negotiation

Winning in a negotiation is not occurred by luck but by following a clear and planned process. This
process includes different levels, various parties related to it and the way of communication at various
stages of it. The following steps are essential for an effective negotiation:

Counter & Revised Offers: Here occurs the real bargaining in DTL. Elements of order such as product
details, lead time and number of units are being decided with a comparison of the overall cost, value of the
product that the buyer should make the proposals to buy the product.

Preparation: Effective and efficient preparation regarding the negotiation is vital to successful
communication. DTL makes the maximum and minimum positions that the buyer will be able to accept for
a range of factors like lead time, order size and product price.

Offer: The buyer/customer and the supplier can make the required proposals specifically to make a set of
boundaries of negotiation. DTL helps the buyers to make the proposals.

L/C (Letter of Credit): Different types of L/C are present in business system such as Master L/C, Back to
Back L/C (B2B L/C), Sight L/C, Revocable L/C and Irrevocable L/C. In Apex B2B L/C, Sight L/C mainly
used.

4. Introduction to RMG
RMG Sector Production Process
Every factory of Bangladesh has a sequence of production process. It is also followed in Divine Textile Ltd
where I was attached as an intern. The sequences are-

Production Sheet: At first the knitting manager collects the production sheet from the merchandiser in
accordance with the customer's/buyer's requirement. After getting it, then he informs/orders the production
officer.

Informing Technical In-charge: After getting the production sheet from the knitting officer, the
production officer informs the technical in-charge about it and decides the machines to be running.

Mechanical Fitter Troops: The technical in-charge then calls the leader for mechanical fitter troops and
they take the decision regarding machine considering the production capacity, complexity of maintenance
and condition of machine.

Adjusting Stitch Length: The production officer then adjusts the stitch length with experienced
mechanical fitter and grey GSM for the fulfillment of final GSM.

Checking Daily Production: The supervisor checks the daily production and take proper actions to make
the operator careful about finishing the production within short time.

Informing Mechanical Fitter: The operators in every production line pay full attention in operating the
machines and always careful about any type of fabric fault. If they find any fault in fabric they inform the
mechanical fitters in duty.

Sending to Dyeing Section: After the final production and inspection in 4 point system, they sent the
garments to the dyeing section.

3.3 Learning for Self-Improvement

After completion the tenure of three month intern program, I have achieved practical knowledge about
knitting manufacturing activities. DTL is a joint manufacturer & exporter. Divine Textile Ltd is committed
to the best human workplace practices. Continuous improvement of human resource policies and
procedures is the main goal of DTL. It will be possible through proper education, communication, training
and investment in employees' improvement. Right from inception the policy of the company has been to
provide total customer satisfaction by offering quality garment in time. Working on new concepts in
styling & content of the garment is a continuous activity in Apex Holdings Ltd with an objective to up the
quality and the value of merchandise. DTL has decided to integrate the manufacturing and planning
process in a well-planned manner to meet the commitments of ensuring quality and in time delivery.

For achieving their goal, Divine Textile Ltd has recruited a high profiled human resource team. The
production is controlled by skill persons. All of the decision makers of production sector in Divine textile
Ltd are skill workers. The goal of DTL is to get high production & to maintain the quality of the product at
a minimum cost. DTL is notable to produce all types of garment. Because of their high thought and plan,
accuracy of work and execute an order will increase to a maximum level. Manual straight knife cutting m/c

is used for cutting the fabrics. If they use computerized cutting m/c, their efficiency of work will increase
to a maximum level. Their product quality, efficiency and accuracy will be maximum if they improve the
above things.

3.4 Findings
My study has focused on the Production Process of Devine Textile Ltd(DTL). The main findings as my
practical study about DTL are given below:

 DTL maintains both manual and computerized system for productions and operations.
 The personnel management is more centralized that’s why employees & workers face more
pressure.
 Lack of technical and skilled labor causes more costs.
 More dependent on cheap labor.
 Lack of timely and proper finance has created barriars to enlarge operation and new installment.
 Sufficient Research and Development may lose foreign market place.

3.5 Recommendations
Following recommendations may get rid of the problems of DTL:
 More computerized and automation system should be introduced.
 Skilled labor and more technical personnel should be recruited.
 Proper financing from local foreign should be ensured timely.
 Research and Development should be enhanced.
 Eco- friendly production should be ensured.

Conclusion

Devine Textile Limited is one of the largest contributors in national economy of Bangladesh. Its
restless service in textile industry of Bangladesh is remarkable. It follows all standards in production
process. The production system of DTL is in developing stage. DTL uses both manual and
computerized system for Production, but they are being more updated now. More initiatives are being
developed for getting more facilities. When they will ensure proper investment in new infrastructure

decrease pressure on workforces. The overall movement of DTL is favorable, all of the workforces and
