NUMBER-RELATION PROBLEMS

• Twice the larger of two numbers is three more than five times the smaller, and the sum of four times the larger
and three times the smaller is 71. What are the numbers? (Ans: Larger number is 14, smaller number is 5)
• The excess of the sum of half and the third parts over the difference of the fourth and fifth parts of a number is
188. What is the value of the number? (Ans: 240)
• If triple a certain number was decreased by 5, the result would be equal to 3 less than twice the number. What
is the number? (Ans: 2)
• Find three consecutive integers whose sum is 363. (Ans: 120, 121, 122)
• One number is two more than thrice another number their sum is 30. Find the numbers (Ans: 23 and 7)

GEOMETRIC PROBLEMS

• If the length of each side of a square is increased by 3cm, the perimeter of the new square is 40cm more than
twice the length of each side of the original square. Find the dimensions of the original square. (Ans: One side
measures 14cm)
• A puzzle piece in the shape of an isosceles triangle has a perimeter of 30cm. Two sides of the triangle are twice
as long as the shortest side. Find the length of the shortest side. (Ans: 6cm)
• The perimeter of a triangular plot of land is 2400ft. The longest side is 200ft less than twice the shortest. The
middle side is 200ft less than the longest side. Find the lengths of the three sides of the triangular plot. (Ans:
600ft x 800ft x 1000ft)
• A storage bin is in the shape of a closed rectangular box. Find the height of the box if its length is 18ft, its width
is 8ft, and its total surface area is 496 ft2. (Ans: 4ft)
• If the length of each side of a square is decreased by 4 inches, the perimeter of the new square is 10 inches
more than half the perimeter of the original square. What is the area of the original square? (Ans: 169 square
inches)

AGE PROBLEMS

• Alfred is four times as old as his nephew Franco. 5 years ago, the sum of their ages is equal to the present age of
Alfred. How old is each? (Alfred is 40 y.o and Franco is 10 y.o)
• The difference in the age of two people is 20 years. If 5 years ago, the elder one of the two was 5 times as old as
the younger one, find their present ages. (Elder is 30 y.o and the younger one is 10 y.o)
• In six years, Todd will be twice as old as Darla was when they met 6 years ago. If their ages total 78 years, how
old are they now? (Todd is 46 y.o and Darla is 32 y.o)
• Phil is Tom's father. Phil is 35 years old. Three years ago, Phil was four times as old as his son was then. How old
is Tom now? (Tom is 11 y.o)
• Esmeralda is one-third as old as her brother, Khufra, and 8 years younger than her sister Eudora. The sum of
their ages is 38 years old. How old is Esmeralda? (Esmeralda is 6 y.o)

MIXTURE PROBLEMS

• A chemist needs 20% solution of alcohol. She has a 15% solution on hand, as well as a 30% solution. How many
liters of the 15% solution should she add to 3L of the 30% solution to obtain the 20% solution? (Ans: 6L)
• A tea merchant wants to make 20 pounds of a blended tea costing $5.60 per pound. The blend is made using a
$6.50-per-pound grade of tea and a $4.25-per-pound grade of tea. How many pounds of each grade of tea
should be used? (Ans: 12 pounds of the $6.50-per-pound grade and 8 pounds of the $4.25-per-pound grade)
• A mechanic finds that a car with 20-quart radiator has a mixture containing 30% antifreeze in it. How much of
this mixture would he have to drain out and replace with pure antifreeze to get a 50% antifreeze mixture? (40/7
quarts)
• A goldsmith has two alloys of gold, the first being 70% pure and the second being 60% pure. How many ounces
of the 60% pure gold must be used to make 100 ounces of an alloy which will be 66% gold? (Ans: 40 ounces)
• A starbucks barista mixes coffee beans that cost $8 per pound with coffee beans that cost $4 per pound. How
many pounds of each should be used to make a 50-pound blend that sells for $5.50 per pound? (18.75 pounds
of the $8 coffee and 31.25 pounds of the $4 coffee)

WORK PROBLEMS

• One pipe can fill a tank in 6 hours and another pipe can fill the same tank in 3 hours. A drain pipe can empty the
tank in 24 hours. With all three pipes open, how long will it take to fill in the tank? (Ans: 2.18 hours)
• The time required for two examinees to solve the same problem differ by two minutes. Together, they can solve
32 problems in one hour. How long will it take for the slower problem solver to solve a problem? (Ans: 5 mins)
• Terry can paint a fence 50% faster than John and 20% fast than Randy and together they can paint a given fence
in 4 hours. How long will it take Terry to paint the same fence if he had to work alone? (Ans: 10 hrs)
• Two mechanics were working on your car. One mechanic can complete the given job in six hours, but the new
kid that she's training takes eight hours to do the same job. They worked together for the first two hours, but
then the first mechanic left to help another mechanic on a different job. How long will it take the new kid to
finish fixing your car? (Ans: 3.33 hrs)
• It takes 6 hours for pump A, used alone, to fill a tank of water. Pump B used alone takes 8 hours to fill the same
tank. We want to use three pumps: A, B and another pump C to fill the tank in 2 hours. How long would it take
pump C, used alone, to fill the tank? (Ans: 24/5 hours)

MOTION PROBLEMS

• Two people drive towards each other between two towns that are 160 km apart. The first man drives at the rate
of 45 kph and the other drives at 35 kph. From their starting point, how long would it take them to pass by each
other? (Ans: 2 hrs)
• A man travels in a motorized banca at the rate of 12 kph from his barrio to the población and comes back to his
barrio at the rate of 10 kph. If his total time to travel back and forth is 3 hours and 10 mins, find the distance
between the barrio and the población. (Ans: 17.27 km)
• It takes Seth 60 seconds to run around a 440-yard track. How long does it take Anthon to run around the track if
they meet in 32 seconds after they start together in a race around the track in opposite directions? (Ans: 68.57
seconds)
• Carmela drove for three hours before lunch. After lunch, she drove 4 more hours and averaged 15 mph more
than before lunch. If her total distance was 410 miles, what was her average speed before lunch? (Ans: 50 mph)
• At 9 am a car (A) began a journey from a point, traveling at 40 mph. At 10 am another car (B) started traveling
from the same point at 60 mph in the same direction as car (A). At what time will car B pass car A? (Ans: 12
noon)
• John left his house at 3:00 pm to drive 60 mph to drive towards Michigan. Phoebe left the same house at 5:00
pm, driving 80 mph in the same direction as John. How long will it take Phoebe to overtake John? (Ans: 6 hours)
