Personification

Objectives:
1. Define personification using examples from the short story the three little pigs after a
reading.
2. Identify examples of personification clearly detecting the human qualities used to
personify.
3. Create a poem containing 2 stanzas using personification after viewing a sample poem
on the board.
4. Examine the use of personification in a given poem and comment on its effectiveness.
Content:
Personification means using human qualities or actions to describe an object or an animal.
These qualities can be human emotions, sensations, physical characteristics or actions The
word “personification” actually contains the word “person,” and to personify an object means
to describe it as if it were a person.
Using a human word to describe an object can make a poetic image seem more vivid. It can
also give us an idea about how the narrator (the person describing the object) is feeling
toward the object. For example, “The sun was smiling down at me” seems to indicate that the
narrator has positive feelings about the sunshine. On the other hand, a narrator who says “The
sun was glaring down” seems to have negative feelings about it.
Circle the idea, object, animal being personified and underline what they’re doing that makes
it an example of personification.
1. The sun danced across the sky on the hot summer day.
2. The big full moon guided me through the forest.
3. The mountain listened to the rumbles beneath its surface.
4. As the rain pounded to the ground, everyone ran for cover.
5. The old man sat at the edge of the sea as the waves crashed on the shore.
6. The old car groaned as it made its way down the long open road.
7. The wind whispered lonely sounds as it blew through the old creaky windows.
8. The leaves raced to the ground as the children ran across the playground.
9. The pencil moaned as the boy turned the handle on the pencil sharpener.
10. The tornado pranced across the field and wiped away everything in its path.
Teaching Strategies/Methods-
1. Questioning
2. Explanation
3. Class discussion
Teaching/Learning Activities
Engage:
Teacher will read a short story on the three little pigs. After the reading they will be ask, the
students to think about the pigs and the wolf and discuss what they do that normal pigs and
wolves don’t do. Tell them these are examples of personification. Based on the example and
the discussion students will create a definition of the word personification.
Explore:
Students are going to re-examine some of the ideas given during the introductory activity and
tell why they are examples of personification. After this the teacher is going to give some
sentences on the board containing examples of personification and have students work
individually. They are going to underline the object, animal, or idea being personified. They
will circle what they’re doing that makes it an example of personification. Teacher is going to
give students 10 minutes to complete this activity, and then go over each sentence asking
different students to give the example of personification in each sentence.
Explain:
Teacher is going to begin writing nouns on the chalkboard such as monkey, tree, wind, snow,
sky, leaf. Ask students to help you expand this list until you have about 20 nouns on the
board. In another column on the board, write some verbs such as whispered, smiled, laughed.
Ask students to also help you expand this list until you have about 20 verbs. Tell students that
they’re going to write 10 of their own sentences using personification. You will write a
couple of examples on the board such as: The leaf danced across the sky on its journey away
from the tree. Remind them to make use of prepositional phrases, adjective, adverbs, and
other parts of speech learned to make their sentences exciting. Let students share their work
after they are finished.
Elaborate:
Teacher and students are going to create a stanza of a poem using personification. The
students will then create a poem based on one of the example of personification used in step
two. Students are going to be reminded to use prepositional phrases, adjectives and adverbs to
make their poems more interesting. Students should have two stanzas in the poem, each
stanza containing four lines. Students are going to share their poems with their class.
Evaluate:
Students are going to examine a poem and identify examples of personification, state the use
of personification and comment on the main feature being emphasis by personification. The
teacher is going to offer assistance where it is necessary. After they are finished students are
going to share their responses.
