 Explain that all of those objects are nouns, which are the words we use for

the sentence is about, where an event took place, and many other
things relevant to the sentence.
 Write "swim through the sea." on the board and ask students to
identify what is wrong with the sentence.
 Call on one student. After they share their idea, say that we don’t
know who or what swim through sea. Explain that this is because the
sentence is missing a noun. Ask students what noun could be place in
the sentence to make it complete. Call on a few volunteers.

Springboard: “Short Story”

The girls went to the mall with their mother. First, they stopped and looked

at the hamsters, puppies, kittens, mice and birds. Next, they wanted to check out

the store with toys. They looked at the dolls, jacks and jump ropes. While they

were walking around, they saw their teacher, their neighbor and the librarian at the

mall!

The girls left and went home. They were exhausted and hungry. When they

arrived home, their first stop was the kitchen. They grabbed a snack and ate it in

their bedroom. After resting for a while, the girls decided to play outside.
