Do you want to be a better reader? Turn off the television! A recent study found
that kids younger than 6 spend about two hours a day watching TV, playing video
games, or using computers. That is about the same amount of time they spend with a
book! The study which was released on Tuesday included more than 1,000 parents of
kids between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.
Spending a lot of time on the computer, watching TV or playing video games can
make it hard to get better at reading. Kids who live in homes where the TV is on
“most of the time” are less likely to be able to read by age 6.
Reading is still popular, though. Almost 80 percent of kids under 6 are exposed to
books. In fact researchers say kids spend an average of 49 minutes a day with a book.
And what is the average amount of time spent in front of the TV or computer? About
2 hours and 22 minutes!
Victoria Rideout, a researcher for the study, said kids who watch TV, use
computers, and play video games will have an advantage in their lives. She says
media can help their learning, but there are disadvantages, too.
Dr. Henry Shapiro studies kids’ development and behavior. He says reading,
playing with toys, and talking with others is much better for kids’ learning than
watching TV. He also says there is a good side of TV, computers and video games.

Jobs Typical
jobs for teenagers are baby-sitting, newspaper rounds, and helping at home: cleaning
and cutting grass. Boys and girls in the UK earn an average of £65 a week doing
these jobs between the ages of 11 and 13 and £4.55 when they’re 14-16.In the US,
47% of teenagers say most of their money comes from part-time jobs. When they’re

Pocket Money
Last year in the UK, average weekly pocket money for 14-16-year-olds was £
5.66. In the US, teenagers say they get $5 to $10 per week .But 45% of 12-18-year-
olds say they get regular pocket money.US teenagers say they feel very independent,
but 53% admit they often still depend on parents and family for money.
Sweets and chocolate are still favourites for teenagers. In the UK, 57% spend their
money on these products.
Sociologists have noticed that as more British teenagers have mobile phones, fewer
teenagers smoke. One theory is that teenagers can’t afford to pay for both cigarettes
and phone calls. In the US, teenagers can drive a car at 16, and the first thing they
save for is a car. The second thing they save for is university, because it is very
expensive in the US.

Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein was a German-born physicist, although most people probably know
him as the most intelligent person who ever lived. His name has become part of many
languages when we want to say someone is a genius, as in the phrase, “She’s a real
Einstein”. He must have been pretty brainy to discover the Theory of Relativity and
the equation E=mc2.
In 1999, ‘Time’ magazine named Einstein as the Person of the Century. No one could
have guessed this would happen when he was at school. He was extremely interested
in science but hated the system of learning by heart. He said it destroyed learning and
creativity. He had already done many experiments, but failed the entrance exams to a
technical college.
He didn’t let this setback stop him. When he was 16, he performed his famous
experiment of imagining traveling alongside a beam of light. He eventually graduated
from university, in 1900, with a degree in physics. Twelve years later he was a
university professor and in 1921, he won the Nobel Prize for Physics. He went on to
publish over 300 scientific papers.
Einstein is the only scientist to become a cult figure, a household name, and part of
everyday culture.
