Fall 2016

Dear Spellman community,

Arriving at Spellman only weeks ago, I was impressed with what I have come to learn is called the Spellman Spirit. That intangible and some-
times difficult to articulate feeling that seems to breathe life into the heart of Cardinal Spellman High School and is responsible for what I have
also come to know is the “Spellman Experience.” This experience for me was first encountered at mass here at Spellman during Catholic School’s
week when I came to visit during the search process. It was truly remarkable and unforgettable to see the devotion and passion with which the
students, faculty and staff here commit to their celebration of their faith. It is refreshing to witness a school with such an infectious spirit and it
certainly left me craving more of the Spellman Experience.

Today, Catholic Education in the 21st century hinges on the investment of so many hands and minds
devoted to the singular vision of bringing the joy of the Gospel, the pursuit of truth and the appreciation
of beauty to all who seek them. Without the sacrifice of passionate teachers, dedicated coaches, committed
parents and generous stakeholders this great adventure would not be possible! As I begin this adventure
with all of you I ask for your prayers and know that mine will be with you, the Spellman family, for a
truly successful, rewarding, and fulfilling year.

chairman’s letter

Fall 2016

Dear Members of the Spellman Community,

The beginning of a school year is always an exciting time. Students have a fresh start with new opportunities to maximize their potential. The
faculty, staff and administration are eager to engage our students in their educational endeavors. Welcome back!

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to extend a special welcome to our new president, Daniel Hodes. Dan brings a wealth of educa-
tional leadership and expertise to Spellman and will enthusiastically lead our school through its next era.

We are ready for the new school year to begin!

As we advance our curriculum for 21st century learning, several technological programs have been imple-
mented. Four years ago, 1-1 computing was introduced to students and faculty with the iPad initiative. As the
integration of this technology has evolved, the need for an interactive and collaborative learning environment
emerged. Last year’s completion of the Library Learning Commons fulfilled this purpose. It has been exciting
to observe the more complex and creative work generated by the students and faculty with the use of digital
and online applications and tools in this redesigned space. We look forward to integrating this learning envi-
ronment even more fully into our curriculum in the coming year.

A strategic plan provides a framework for the master plan of school programs, operations and facilities.
We are entering the final year of our 2012-2017 Strategic Plan. Over the course of this school year, we will
develop the 2017-2022 Plan. Updates will be provided on our progress.

As we embark on the next important chapter of our school, I invite you to come back to the campus. There are many ways that you can be a
part of the Spellman experience including Masses, drama performances, athletics events, the Legacy Gala, class reunions, golf tournaments, open
houses and much more. Thank you for all you do through your prayers, your time, your expertise, financial resources and commitment to Spell-
man’s future.

As always, Sequere Deum!

Spellman faculty member Brother Paul Alves was in the stands, having been
invited by his students. Little did he know, he was about to start a tradition.
Brother Paul walked out to the field before the start of the game to pray with
the team. Armed with holy water, he spoke of God’s guidance to victory, and
sprinkled the athletes. There was absolutely no surprise when they won.

The pre-game prayer continued the rest of the season, with a different parent
leading the team each game. The presence of God on the field was a solid
reminder of the Spellman experience – an education of the whole person,
academically, spiritually, and socially. The leaders of this team – captains

Ryan has felt Spellman support from many different members in

Mr. Barry Cosgrove ’75, Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees,

Ryan still had one more hurdle. The first football scrim-

But when asked about his senior season, Ryan
was optimistic: “I won’t miss out.” And the

Creedon Memorial Road Race

The sixth annual Mark R. Creedon Memorial Road Race was held Saturday, April 9, 2016 at D.W. Field Park.
With blue skies and the sun shining down, the energy was high as racers, spectators and friends regis-
tered and enjoyed a cup of coffee with old friends – and, in many instances, Spellman classmates.
Last year’s scholarship recipient, Ashley Glynn ‘17 and this year’s scholarship recipient, Richard
O’Leary ‘17, signaled the start of the race. Runners, joggers and walkers took off to complete
the 3.5-run or 2.2-mile walk. Once everyone returned to the starting area, winners were
announced, a Spellman alumni photo was taken, and all were invited back to Tommy Doyle’s
at Sidelines to keep remembering, laughing, and honoring Mark.

Be sure to save the date for next year’s race: Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 10am!
