Purpose

This document serves to assist the evaluation and planning of the installation of a sys-
tem to be deployed as Voyage Data Recorder OR Simplified Voyage Data Recorder
according to IEC61996 & IEC PAS 61996-2.

It is to be filled out with the purpose of providing complete information to enable detailed
compliance and planning of

• Physical location of the various units of the VDR


• Determination of interface units and adaptors required
• Power requirements
• Cabling requirements

Where text appears in GREY color, it represents the original IEC specification text the installa-
tion should comply to. This document does not contain the full specification as required by IMO
regulations.

Performance requirements described are specified, where relevant, by refer-


ence to the numbered paragraphs of IMO MSC.163(78), if not otherwise indi-
cated. Some requirements specified are only relevant to equipment designated
as an S-VDR and required to meet IMO MSC.163(78). For equipment desig-
nated as a VDR to IMO performance standards defined in resolution A.861(20)
refer to IEC 61996.

1. Protective Capsule

Location of the protective capsule

The protective capsule shall be sited in the vicinity of the bridge on the external deck area
of the vessel so as to maximize the probability of its survival and recovery following an
incident. The capsule shall be positioned clear of rigging and other potential obstructions
and as near to the centerline of the ship as practically possible.
Criteria to be considered when assessing the optimum position shall include but not be
limited to the following:

• separation from fuel or other potential fire sources,

• separation from probable sources of mechanical damage,
• operational environment for continued serviceability,
• accessibility for copying of recorded data and for routine maintenance,
• facilitation of underwater removal and retrieval by both divers and ROVs. There shall be a clear
unobstructed space in the vicinity of the capsule to allow an ROV or diver to work.

Cabling is from any side or alternati-


vely thru the bottom of the unit.

Mounting alternatives:

A. Bolt thru deck with DIN912 bolts 12 mm


x 40 mm. Drilling needs to be carried out.

B. Bolt into deck with DIN912 bolts 12 mm


x 30 mm. A thread needs to be cut.

C. Welding a mounting plate plate on the

2. Bridge Control Unit

Installation guidelines

Location of the bridge control unit

The BCU shall be sited at a position at which a person is expected to be when performing one of the nor-
mal bridge duties. Alarm lights and audible signals should not be obscured.

Criteria to be considered when assessing the optimum position shall include but not be
limited to the following:



compass safe distance 50 cm
protected environment ( bridge interior )

• separation from probable sources of environmental damage ( heat/moist )
• operational environment for continued serviceability
• accessibility for copying of recorded data and for routine maintenance ( front only )
• although not necessairy, for practical purposes the BCU may be positioned adjacent to the AIS or
GPS to allow the BCU to function as NMEA or AIS interface ( to the VDR ) . This eliminates the
need for a separate AIS adaptor to be placed into any of the the WaveNet Interface Modules ( also
refer to page xx )

Cabling is from the back of the unit,

For dimensions pleqase refer to next page allow 20 cm for smooth bends.

Mounting alternatives:

A. Provide a hole in the console panel or


bulkhead, and secure mounting plate with
bolts & screws provided. Unit ‘ sinks ’ into
mounting plate & autolocks.

B. Use mounting bracket ( within standard


supply package ) to position the unit on
top of any console & turn/ tilt unit into rea-
deable position

2. 1 Bridge Control Unit Interfacing

4.6.5 Bridge audio (A.861/5.4.5)


One or more microphones positioned on the bridge
shall be placed, such that conversation at or near the
conning stations, radar displays, chart tables, etc. (i.e.
at work stations as defined in 3.1.9) may be ade-
quately recorded. As far as is practicable, the posi-
tioning of microphones shall also capture the input
and output of intercom, public address systems and
the audible alarms on the bridge (bridge mounted
equipment) .

VHF Transceivers

4.6.6 Communications audio (A.861/5.4.6)


VHF communications relating to ship operations shall
be recorded, independently of the bridge audio. The
recording shall include both transmitted and received
audio signals and shall be continuous from a directly 11
connected fixed VHF set to be designated at installa-
tion.
4. Interfacing VDR + S-VDR
- Part 1 Mandatory Items
As far as mandatory items to be recorded are concerned there is no difference between VDR and SVDR installations.

NetWAve NW-4400 series VDRs are acquiring data thru so called WaveNet Interface Mudules (WIM), which are
universal and are each fitted out with a choice of WaveNet Adaptor Modules.

Per WIM a maximum of 6 adaptors may be mounted. The WIM will automatically configure itself as to the type and
number of adaptors inserted. The engineer only needs to connect the various signal sources from external equip-
ment.

The following adaptors are available;

S-VDR Mandatory Items (minimum requirement)


4.6 Data items to be recorded

4.6.1 Date and time
(MSC.163(78) 5.4.1)
Date and time referenced to UTC, shall be obtained from a source external to the ship (for
example, an EPFS or radio time signal) if available,

4.6.2 Ship’s position

Latitude and longitude, and the datum used, shall be derived from a designated EPFS or INS
if available.

4.6.3 Speed
(MSC.163(78) 5.4.3)
Speed through the water, or speed over the ground (transverse as well as longitudinal in
either case, as available on the ship), including an indication from which it is, derived from the
ship’s designated speed and distance measuring equipment, shall be recorded, as available
on the ship, up to a resolution of 0,1 kn.

4.6.4 Heading

As indicated by a designated ship's compass. The ship’s heading shall be recorded, as
available on the ship, up to a resolution of 0,1°.

4.6.8 AIS
(MSC.163(78) 5.4.8)
Where there is no commercial off-the-shelf interface available to obtain radar data then AIS
target data shall be recorded as a source of information regarding other ships, otherwise AIS
information may be recorded additionally as a beneficial secondary source of information on

both other and own ship. The VDM message shall be recorded in such a way that all target data
available from the onboard AIS are acquired.
If the VDO message is recorded, this shall be additional to the recording of individual sensor.

5. Interfacing VDR
- Part 2 Mandatory Items VDR
(and mandatory for S-VDR only if available in NMEA format)

NetWAve NW-4400 series are interfacing thru so called WaveNet Interface Mudules (WIM), which are universal
and are each fitted out with a choice of WaveNet Adaptor Modules.

Per WIM a maximum of 5 adaptors may be mounted. The WIM will automatically configures itself as to the type
and number of adaptors inserted.

The following adaptors are available;

VDR Mandatory Items (minimum requirement)

4.6.8 Echo sounder (A.861/5.4.8)


This shall include depth under keel, up to a resolution of 0,1 m as available on the ship. The depth
scale currently being displayed and other status information shall be recorded where available.
4.6.9 Main alarms (A.861/5.4.9)
This shall include the status of all IMO mandatory alarms on the bridge (see annex B).
The status of all IMO mandatory alarms shall be recorded by the bridge audio and as a data
parameter where practicable.
4.6.10 Rudder order and response (A.861/5.4.10)
Both rudder order and response angles shall be recorded up to a resolution of 1° as available
and permitted on the ship. Status and settings of heading or track controller , if fitted, shall also
be recorded.
4.6.11 Engine order and response (A.861/5.4.11)
This shall include the positions of any engine telegraphs or direct engine/propeller controls,
including shaft(s) r.p.m. (or equivalent), and feedback indications, if fitted, including ahead/
astern indicators. This shall also include status of bow and stern thrusters if fitted. RPM shall
be recorded up to a resolution of 1 r.p.m. and pitch shall be recorded up to a resolution of 1°.
4.6.12 Hull openings (doors) status (A.861/5.4.12)
This shall include all IMO mandatory status information required to be displayed on the bridge.
4.6.13 Watertight and fire door status (A.861/5.4.13)
This shall include all IMO mandatory status information required to be displayed on the bridge.
4.6.14 Accelerations and hull stresses (A.861/5.4.14)
Where a ship is fitted with IMO mandated hull stress and response monitoring equipment, all
the data items that have been pre-selected within that equipment and are available shall be
recorded.
4.6.15 Wind speed and direction (A.861/5.4.15)
This shall be applicable where a ship is fitted with a suitable sensor. Either relative or true wind
speed and direction may be recorded, but an indication of which it is shall be recorded.

6. Power Requirements

NetWave NW-4400 VDR series have—within the Power Supply and Switch Unit—an integrated Reserve Power
source (batteries) as indicated in IED61996 4.5.3., but should still—for its primairy power source—be connected
to the ships emergency power source, or alternatively 24 VDC if this is backed up by batteries.

4.5.2 Power source (A.861/5.3.1 )

To ensure that the VDR continues to record events during an incident, it shall be capable of
operating from the ship's emergency source of electrical power. Whenever electrical power is
available the VDR shall operate, except as permitted in 4.5.4 (see 6.1.15).

7. WaveNet Interface adaptors

WaveNet adaptors are placed within the WaveNet Interface Module.

Any mix of 5 adaptors may be used, however, the radar adaptor uses 2 slots, all
other adaptors require one slot. Furthermorem to eliminate excessive cabling re-
quirements, upto 3 VDR units (either capsule, BCU, WIMs) may be daisy chained
onto 1 PSU port. The PSU has 6 powered ports.

WAM Type 4420 WAVENET™ 4-CH BRIDGE MIC / 2 CH VHF ADAPTOR


This adapter provides four separate audio channels, which are individually recorded.
Two of these channels are configured as microphones (fixed) and the other two
channels can be selected to be either VHF inputs or microphone inputs.
Up to 4 separate audio channels (1 x 4420 adaptor) may be digitized and com-
pressed per WIM. Connection is with pluggable, lockable screw terminals. Up to 12
individual channels (microphones or VHF) may be recorded.

NW-4422 Microphone interior/exterior, flush/bulkhead/ceiling mounting


With its unique feature to be mounted in any location and position, being it bridge
interior or externally on the bridge wings, this (seawater protected, anodised alu-
minium) microphone provides crystal clear recording capabilities. The microphone
has built in presence & monitoring functionality, is shock– and water-ingress proof
and has unique background noise cancellation

WAM Type 4430 WAVENET™ SERIAL-NMEA ADAPTOR 4800Bd


The 4430 adaptor provides 8 serial NMEA input ports (separate recording channels)
according to the IEC61662 standard, which is typical for shipboard equipment pro-
viding such outputs like GPS, etc. Maximum 60 NMEA channels per VDR system.
One WIM can hold maximum 4 x NW4430 adaptors. Connection is with pluggable,
lockable screw terminals.

WAM Type 4450 WAVENET™ 4-CH ANALOGUE ADAPTOR


The WaveConnect™ Analogue adapter is a microprocessor based, wet or dry con-
tact interface. 4 input channels per adaptor, configurable to accept 4-20mA, +/-5V,
+/-10V, and 0-10V analog input. Each discrete input channel is able to detect the
presence or absence of a voltage while maintaining complete opto-isolation from the
voltage source. In addition, the WaveConnect™ Analogue adapter incorporates full
DC-DC electrical isolation in its input power supply.

WAM Type 4436 WAVENET™ DIGITAL ADAPTOR

Each 4436 adaptor provides 8 digital I/O’s, which may be powered (10-36 VDC) or
unpowered sensors. One WIM can hold a maximum 4 NW4436 adaptors, therefore
32 channels.

WAM type 4460 - WAVENET™ AIS ADAPTOR 38.4K Bd
The 4460 adaptor provides a high-speed serial NMEA interface into the VDR’s
Network especially for retrieving AIS data.

WAM Type 4440 WAVENET™ ANALOG & DVI RADAR VIDEO ADAPTOR SXGA

This adaptor provides inputs for both analogue and digital video coming from Radar or ECDIS
systems. All interfacing is according to VESA standards, as supported by most Radar manu-
facturers. Resolution from VGA, SVGA to SXGA, therefore up to 1024x1280 pixels. Connec-
tion is thru a DVI connector. Per WIM, one 4440 Radar Interface adaptor may be placed,
which occupies a double slot. Per VDR system up to 8 video inputs may be installed.

WAM Type 4442 WAVENET™ ANALOG & DVI RADAR VIDEO ADAPTOR HIRES
This adaptor provides inputs for both analogue and digital video coming from Radar or ECDIS
systems. All interfacing is according to VESA standards, supported by most Radar manufac-
turers. Resolution 1200x1600 pixels. Connection is thru a DVI connector. Per WIM, one 4442
Radar Interface adaptor may be placed, which occupies a double slot. Per VDR system up to
8 video inputs may be installed.

WAM Type 4472 WaveNet ™ Gyro Synchro Interface adaptor


Microprocessor based marine gyrocompass interface. Designed as a universal interface, it
can connect to most 360:1 synchro-type compasses. Synchro phases: 360:1, 1:180, 1:90 and
1:36 and synchro reference: 20-120 V. An intelligent software algorithm establishes and main-
tains a lock on the compass signal. An intelligent A/D conversion algorithm combined with an
isolated, radiometric design provides accurate, stable compass data. Various software ver-
sions are available, allowing configuration to "non-standard" compasses and "non-standard"
output data formats.

WAM Type 4470 WaveNet ™ Gyro Stepper Interface adaptor


Microprocessor based gyrocompass interface. Designed as a universal interface, it can con-
nect to most 1:360, 1:180, 1:90 and 1:36 stepper-type marine gyrocompasses. An intelligent
software algorithm establishes and maintains a lock on the compass signal. An intelligent A/
D conversion algorithm combined with an isolated, radiometric design provides accurate, sta-
ble compass data. The unit auto detects and configures for interfaces with marine compasses
having output voltages in the following range 20-100 V. Software versions are available, al-
lowing configuration to "non-standard" compasses and "non-standard" output data formats.

10. Configuration Examples

In order to obtain a prictical as well as cost-effective solution the number and location of
WaveNet Interface units has to be determined taking into account;

All WIMs are universal and may accommodate various adaptors (intermixed), however with
the following limitations;

1 WIM may have a maximum of 5 adaptor-slots occupied.


1 Radar-video interface requires 2 slots, all others require 1 slot
