‘I Still Remember, Mom’

by
Teacher Syarifah Norasyikin binti Sayed Noordin

I still remember, mom,

The first time I learnt
I like to see things burn
In the bathroom
I was sitting on the sink
I discovered a box of matches someone had forgot
I took lit match the toilet roll
And reveled in the flame
And you mom, rescue me
Despite putting me into blame.

I still remember, mom,

The first time
On the first day of school
You told me
To go put down my bag
I knew you would be gone
by the time I returned
Even though you denied it
Through my tears I understood
It was for the best
But this didn’t make it hurt any less
But you, mom
Convinced me to be brave
With the way I should be engraved.

I still remember, mom,

The first time
I never did learn to count so well
Nine, one, one, nine
1
I couldn’t keep from setting things on fire
But you mom,
Kept on encouraging me
with the right measure.

I still remember, mom,

The first time
Your tears fell with joy
When you saw me walked up the stage
Eyeing me with handful of reward
Achievement after the sweat and tears
The struggles and hardships
which I’ve been through
All these whiles.
The loving hugs you engulfed me
Made me wonder with sanity
That you are more worthy
Rather than the sea of treasury.

I still remember, mom,

The first time I learnt
That stars were big and burning
I thought to myself ‘twinkle, twinkle’
is not so little after all
Some days I drowned in my grief
And it would be an awesome blaze
Which I, too, can burn big
Though I am the only one striving.
But mom,
You turn the agony inside of me
Into the moments of glory.

I still remember,
The first time
2
You stroked my hair
Touched me gently on my cheeks
Wipe away my tears
Calm me down, nurturing my rage
Tenderly, you told me
“Remember dear
Don’t be tired
Of being a good, noble person to everyone
Being good will bring you serenity
And God will always there to guide you
Wherever you go.”

Up until now
I still remember, mom
All your first timers
The caresses you showered me
The advice you pampered me
With the longing looks in your eyes
Still lingered in my mind
Though you were never there for me again
May you rest in peace
My prayers will always be with you
For eternity.
Thank you, mom…
I love you…
