WELFARE BABY by Cheryl Albury

Brown bundle

Defenceless he lay there.

“Mother’s only sixteen,

Doesn’t want him.”

“Besides she’s not sure,

Was it Harold or Jim?”

“Nose is straight, hair is curly -

Surely it’s white man’s baby.”

Brown bundle

Defenceless he lay there.

She reached out to hold him but couldn’t;

Her offering a silent commentary.

Brown bundle

Defenceless he lay there.

Unloved. Nameless.

Too soon a casualty.
