10A
 Available as 6 or 12 pulse configuration (AC in DC out)

 Complete drive with internal dual rectifier for 12 or 6 pulse operation
(AC in AC out)
 Available as single or modular drive 12T
 Cubicle mounted in Rittal VX25
 The rectifier and DC link are designed such that an external input line
reactor is not required.
 DC terminal connections are available, using the correct Busbar kit
 Input/ Output chokes ( Line inductors)
- Frame 12 is the drive with the highest current and power ratings manufactured by Control
Techniques. The power rating of a drive is inversely proportional to the required inductance of
the INL and OTL chokes, consequently the inductance needed to ensure correct operation of
Frame 12 is low. 15 metres of cable provides enough inductance to replace the OTL, and INL
choke inductance can be replaced by combination of cable and the supply transformer
v1.0.6
inductance. 29
Drive format - Unidrive M frame 12T
 Input line inductors
- Frame 12 drives have been designed to operate without input line inductors if
the following conditions are met: 12T
» The supply transformer is no larger than 2 MVA
» The input cables must be at least 15 metres* or longer from the transformer to the drive
» Cables specified in the Frame 12 Power Installation Guide are used

- *In certain applications it may not be possible to fit cables of 15 metres or

greater from the transformer to the drive. If it is not possible then the INL
choke must be fitted.
- If the above conditions cannot be met and INL chokes are required, they must
be sourced locally. Refer to Frame 12 section in Support Suite for the INL
choke specification

v1.0.6 48
12 pulse configurations

 With Frame 9T,10T & 11T, a 12 pulse rectifier eliminates the crucial fifth and seventh
harmonics (except for a small residue caused by imperfect balance of the rectifier
groups).
 The drive is fed from a 12 pulse transformer, this has star and delta windings (or zig-
zag windings) have a relative 30° phase shift

inverter modules, using a common DC bus

v1.0.6 52
12 pulse configuration

Configuration Advantages Disadvantages

Use the ‘T’ version of the product Simplest solution Additional AC cabling to get 6 connections to each 12 pulse
No DC connections rectifier
No DC fusing
DC balancing links between pairs of No large common DC bus bar Requires an even number of rectifiers and inverters
drives No DC fusing required
Generally the lower cost option
Common DC bus Any number of inverters can be used (does not Requires a large number of DC bus fuses
need to be even) Generally the higher cost option

The OTLX1X parallel output sharing chokes can only be used when two Unidrive M/Unidrive HS
Modular drives are paralleled together.
For all other combinations the OTLX0X output sharing choke must be used.
v1.0.6 68
Paralleling Cable

 Paralleling Cable
- A single one metre paralleling 68 way cable is supplied
with each follower pod. 1 m, 2 m and 5 m cables are also
available separately
Length Old Part Number New Part Number
1m 3471-9842 3417-6301
2m 3471-6013 3471-6302
5m 3471-6850 3471-6305

 Maximum lengths
- Individual links between modules should be nominally 2 m
in length however a maximum of two 5 m lengths can be
used in a parallel system. The maximum combined
paralleling cable length can not exceed 40 m.
v1.0.6 69
Paralleled modules (2 Power Modules)

• DC bus can be supplied with:

– the Unidrive M rectifier
– regen active front end
– as part of a common DC
supply

• DC fuses not required for twin

rectifier with two inverters. AC
fuses are adequate to clear fault.

• OTL chokes not required for

single motor single inverter
combinations.

• Dual OTL choke (OTLX1X) can be

used for parallel systems
comprising of two inverters only.

Paralleled modules (with a common motor)

- Dual and single

v1.0.6 INL chokes can be mixed 71

v1.0.6 72
Frame 12 Single

 Single Drive
- M000 stack plus Standard Pod
- Drive fed from 12 Pulse Transformer, inductance of which usually negates the need for line choke.
- Output Choke isn’t required
- See Power Installation Guide - Power Module Frame 12 for more details

v1.0.6 73
Frame 12 Parallel operation

 Multiple Drive system

- M000 stack(s) plus Master and
Follower pod(s)
- Drives fed from 12 Pulse Transformer,
inductance of which usually negates
the need for Inline choke.
- If output cables are 15 metres or
longer, Output sharing chokes are not
required
- Master and Follower Pods as in
modular system using Frame 9
upwards
- Paralleling cable supplied with
Follower Pod
- See Power Installation Guide - Power 74

Frame 12 Parallel operation

 Motor cable lengths in parallel systems

- In parallel systems, the drives will be
positioned at different distances from the
motors and therefore the motor cable length
for each drive will be different
- Optimum parallel operation is based on good
current sharing between all drives in the
system.
- It is considered good practice to ensure that
the motor cable length for all drives is
reasonably well matched. As a guide, the cable
length difference between all drives in the
system should be within 10%.
- In the example shown , the maximum
difference in cable length is: 16.4m – 15m =
1.4m. This is within 10% and is considered
75
v1.0.6 acceptable.
