SPEC 103-Teaching English in Elementary Grades (Language Arts)

CHAPTER 3
In this chapter, I learn what is differentiated instruction so it
means tailoring instruction to meet the learner’s individual needs. This
provides the learners the opportunity to maximize their learning,
whether as individuals or in small groups. Differentiated instruction has
3 various strategies for teaching first differentiating via content has 4
types Compacting the curriculum, learning contracts, Tiered lessons, and
the Leveled texts, next to the differentiating via process have also a type
the Cubing, RAFT (Role, audience, format, topic), and Graphic
Organizer, Lastly the Differentiating via product. And I also learned the
differences between the two Collaborative learning and Cooperative
learning when we say collaborative learning is an approach to education
that engages groups to enhance the learning experience through groups
of two or more learners. The group is tasked to work together to solve
problems, complete tasks, and learn new concepts, while in cooperative
learning the students are left to get together and work on a given project
as a team. Each participant for the student group uses his or her skills
and knowledge to support the fellow members to understand and
proceed with the work. And lastly, I learned about Gamification which is
it is the integration of game-like mechanics in traditionally non-gaming
scenarios. In schools, gamification has been incorporated into various
aspects of education. Points gained are rewarded with badges, learners
are ranked, and “winners” or the honor students are celebrated.
CHAPTER 4
In this chapter, I learned about the assessment in learning English
it is all about determining whether the learners how, understand, and are
able to perform knowledge and competencies required of them.
Assessment could be viewed through three lenses: Assessment for
learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning. And I also
learned the differences between the two formative and summative
assessments, in a nutshell, formative assessments are quizzes and tests
that evaluate how someone is learning material throughout a course.
Summative assessments are quizzes and tests that evaluate how much
someone has learned throughout a course. And lastly, I learned what is
the traditional assessments and authentic assessments, when we say
traditional assessments are “tests” taken with paper and pencil that are
usually true/false, matching, or multiple choice. These assessments are
easy to grade, but only test isolated applications, facts, or memorized
data at lower-level thinking skills, while authentic assessments are the
measurement of “intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile,
significant, and meaningful,” as contrasted with multiple-choice tests. It
can be devised by the teacher, or in collaboration with the student by
engaging the student voice.
