CREATING PRINTS

TOPIC:
MODULE 1
CREATING PRINTS

CONTENT STANDARDS:
Demonstrates understanding of shapes and texture and prints that
can be repeated, alternated and emphasized through printmaking

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Learners creates prints that show repetition, alternation and empha-
sis using objects from nature and found objects at home and in school.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Differentiate between a print and a drawing or painting
2. Describe the shape and texture of prints made from objects found in
nature and man-made objects and from the artistically designed
prints in his artworks and in the artworks of others
3. Create a print by applying dyes on his finger or palm or any part of
the body and pressing it to the paper, cloth, wall, etc. to create im-
pression
4. Create a print by rubbing pencil or crayon on paper placed on top of
a textured objects from nature and found objects

156
1
PAINTING
• is about creating shape and form using different paints,
brushes, and other tools
• It can be done on cardboard, paper, canvas, wood, plaster,
metals, animal skin and fabric

PAINTING TOOLS
• are important for artists to
create a work of art

157
2
PALETTE
• is a smooth surface
used to mix into the cor-
rect colors and consist-
encies needed by the
artist

PALETTE KNIFE
• is used to mix paints in a
smooth surface or apply the
paint directly onto the canvas
• It is also used to scrape the
canvas to create various ef-
fects

SPONGES
• are objects used to cre-
ate texture
• Different types of spong-
es create different ef-
fects on colors

158
3
DRAWING
• is about using different materials to make lines, shading, and
texture to create two-dimensional or flat images
• It can be done using pencil, pen, charcoal, crayons, pastels,
or less conventional materials such as branches of trees or
fabric

PRINTING
• is the use of line and two-dimensional or flat designs to create
images on a wood block
• These images are then transferred to another materials like
paper or cloth

159
4
PRINTMAKING
• is the process of making artworks by printing on paper
• A print is different from a painting or drawing because prints
can be repeated, alternated, and emphasized

TEXTURE
• in printmaking is use to make it look as it would feel
• You can make the design look smooth and rough
• It refers to the tactile qualities of the physical surface of an
object
• Any flat surfaced objects are used in printmaking plates

160
5
DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES USED IN PRINTMAKING

PLATE
• is a surface containing the original design which is transferred
to paper or fabric to make a print

161
6
Activity: Marble Painting
Materials:

• Marbles
• Paint such as acrylic paint or watercolor paint
• Muffin tin, egg carton, or small bowls to hold the paints
• Spoons
• Paper
• Shallow cardboard box or a baking dish

Steps:
1. Put paint on the muffin tin or any container you’re going to use.
2. Drop your marbles in the paint and mix them around a tad to coat
them in paint.
3. Place a paper on the shallow box or dish you’re going to use.
4. Add paint-covered marbles to the paper in the shallow box/dish.
5. Now lift your shallow box/pan and tilt it this way and that so the
paint-covered marbles roll around and leave their little paint trails,
creating interesting designs on the paper.
6. If desired, you can add additional paint covered marbles and contin-
ue working on the artwork.
7. Or you can stop, remove the marbles, and take out the finished
painting.

LESSON 2
STENCIL PRINTING

TOPIC:
MODULE 2
STENCIL PRINTING
LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Stencil a design (in recycled paper, plastic, cardboard, leaves,
and other materials) and prints on paper, cloth, sinamay, bark,
or a wall
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Students practice mixing colors to create varying color combina-
tions.
2. Students apply stencil and photographic silkscreen processes to
create a series of prints
3. Students critique their print series with their peers focusing on
color and composition

STENCIL PRINTS
• are made by cutting the
desired shape of a design
on a sheet of paper or a
piece of cardboard
• The design is placed over a
sheet of paper or other
materials.
• Paint is then brushed over
the stencil

169
14
TWO WAYS OF USING STENCILS

NEGATIVE SPACE
• You may cut a hole and color
inside the hole

POSITIVE SPACE
• Cut a shape and color
around a shape

170
15
You can create beautiful artwork through stenciling. You
can make stencils of different letters, numbers and shapes.
You can cut out the letters, numbers and shapes out of a
cardboard.

PROCESS OF STENCIL PRINTING

• Plan your design for the

stencil
• Create your stencil
• Place your stencil over your
intended surface
• Apply pigment to your sur-
face

171
16
STENCILING
• produces an image or pattern by applying pigment to a sur-
face over an object with designed gaps. which create the
pattern or image by only allowing the pigment to reach
some parts of the surface

Stencil print designs can be used repeatedly or alternately

on different objects or materials. You can create designs with
different patterns

172
17
Activity: Paper Bag Hand Puppet
Materials:

• bond paper
• pencil, colored pencils, marking pen, or crayons
• pair of scissors
• paint
• sponge

Steps:
1. Make 4 thumbnail sketches of different ideas for your stencil.
2. Choose the design you like best. Draw it on the piece of tag manilla.
3. Make a straight cut from the outer edge of the tag manilla to the out-
line of your drawing.
4. Cut the shape out in one piece. This is the POSITIVE shape.
5. Place tape across the two edges of the opening where you started cut-
ting to join them back together.
6. Make sure the edges are just touching each other where you tape them
so the stencil is flat. This is the NEGATIVE shape.
7. Use 2 plastic lids for your paint.
8. Mix a warm color of tempera paint on one of the lids, and a cool col-
our on the other lid.
9. Place the stencil on the paper and hold it firmly in place.
10.Dab a small sponge into one of the colors of paint.
11.Dab the paint into the open space of the stencil.
12.Make a simple pattern. Try painting several colors in each shape.

NATURE AND OBJECT PRINTS

TOPIC:
MODULE 3
NATURE AND OBJECT PRINTS

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Narrate experiences in experimenting different art materials
2. Participate in school/district exhibit and culminating activity
in celebration of the National Arts Month (February)

NATURE PRINTS
• is a simple printing technique where one uses ink to transfer
images of plants, rocks, and other natural subjects on paper,
cloth, or other surfaces
• It gives you the illusions of texture, and allow you to express
the natural design of objects found in nature

177
22
Below are some of the objects found in nature that are good
materials for printmaking. Objects with wonderful patterns and
textures are best for use in printmaking. You easily tell their shape
and texture.

Nature provides us with different natural materials for print-

ing. You can also make use of recycled materials that can be found
in your home.

PRINTMAKING
• is an art of transferring a design
or picture on paper, board,
wood, or other materials
• It allows us to make several
copies of the same print on car-
tolina, manila paper and cloth

178
23
OBJECT PRINTS
• are made up of found objects like button, coin, comb, plastic
bottles, paper clips, toilet paper tubes and many others can be
made used to create wonderful work of art

NATURE PRINTS
• are man-made objects that are sometimes thrown away
• Found objects especially those with rough textures, are very
useful in making artworks
• They are good materials for making prints by rubbing
• The texture or roughness of the surface of the found object is
what makes rubbing design beautiful

179
24
RUBBING DESIGN
• is done by placing paper on top of rough objects and rubbing
a pencil or a crayon on it

You can do crayon rubbing by rubbing a crayon over a pa-

per on top of a rough object. The same process is done in pencil
rubbing design.

REPETITION, ALTERNATION and EMPHASIS should be

used to make the rubbing design more interesting and beautiful.

25
Activity: Found Object Printmaking From Trash to Treasure
Materials:
• any found objects (buttons, sequence, eraser, sponge, or bottle
caps)
• paint
• paper
• plastic sheet
• tape

Steps:
1. Tape plastic sheeting to your work surface.
2. Make marks on the surface with paint and found drawing tools
like sticks, sponges, etc.
3. Place a piece of paper on the marked surface, rub firmly and
pull the paper up to reveal your print.
