SETTING
The setting of Alice In Wonderland is an imaginary or dream world. At the opening of the story,
Alice, a character based on Alice Liddell, daughter of the renowned classicist Henry Liddell (of
Liddell & Scott), is sitting on the bank of a river. She sees a rabbit rushing down a hole, checking
his watch and exclaiming that he is late. She falls down the rabbit hole as well and lands in a
strange and surrealistic world with a dream logic all its own. At the end of the story, Alice wakes
up, and the reader discovers that the world was a dream one.

PLOT
It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy
world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best
examples of the literary nonsense genre.

CONFLICT
The main conflict occurs during Alice's dinner-party, when strange things start to happen and the
guest are metamorphosing into other beings. Resolution comes when poor frustrated Alice seizes
the table-cloth and crashes everything onto the floor. She then picks up the Red Queen and starts
shaking her.

THEME
The main themes in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are identity, coming of age, and
absurdity. Identity: As Alice journeys farther into Wonderland, she loses touch with her sense of
self and comes to question who she really is. Coming of age: The novel is a coming-of-age story.
CRISTICISM
In part because of its popularity with children and in part because of the fascination it has for
adults, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has become one of the most widely interpreted pieces
of literature ever produced. Victorians praised Lewis Carroll's wordplay and brilliant use of
language. Critics after his death found psychological clues to Carroll's own subconscious in the
book's curious dream-structure and the strange and often hostile creatures of Wonderland.
During the 1960s, many youthful individuals examined the book as a writing on the modern
sedate culture. Alice's Experiences in Wonderland and its spin-off Through the Looking- Glass
and What Alice Found There still interest pundits, who proceed to discover modern readings and
unused implications in Carroll's stories for children.
