REPLACING STRUCTURAL FILL
The quality of excavated material typically plays a major part in the cost of site development.
Often, sites are designed to minimized soil import or export, but without regard to the quality of
the stripped and excavated material. The material generated from the cut operation may not be
suitable for the fill requirements. The fill under structural areas generally require import, and the
site may yield more poor quality material than will fit in the non-structural areas. An expensive
haul-off and/or an expansive import would generally be the result.
It would be far less expensive to remove poor quality materials with a design that lowers the site,
than replace the poor material with structural fill. While this cannot always be achieved within the
sites’ design goals (drainage, aesthetics, etc.), CUPOLEX® may provide a cost effective
alternative solution to these issues:

 The native soil at a site may be too weak to support a structure, so the native soil is replaced
by compacted structural fill to provide the needed bearing capacity.

 If select fill is used, care must be taken to ensure the fill is properly compacted and meets the
requirements for select fill. This normally requires the services of a geotechnical testing firm
testing the physical properties of the fill after the fill is placed to ensure compliance with
specifications is required.

 Many times native materials are inadequate for structural stability. In many cases, sites must
be over excavated to allow for placement of structural fill for load bearing features of slab on
grades.

 Specifications can require excavation to a certain strata, or a minimum amount of fill be placed
below the subgrade. This over-excavated material can either be moved to non-structural fill
areas or typically is requires to be hauled off site.

FEATURES
Cupolex replaces expensive and time consuming engineering of structural fill required to support slabs on grades. Cupolex also
replaces expensive foam insulation and EPS blocks typically used for creating floating concrete slabs when weight limit is a factor.
Cupolex also reduces the “dead load” on top of the existing fill or structure and eliminates the need for costly design analysis and
construction methods associated with higher strength, load bearing structures.

Cupolex is also well suited as a structural void fill in concrete forming
operations. Crews can easily fabricate virtually any shape or slope.
Applications include:
 stadium seating in auditoriums and sports arenas,
 stairways,
 podiums,
 loading docks, and
 rooftop pool decks. EPS
 In garden roofs,
 can provide elevation changes
 provide a lightweight, supportive base for liners, soil,
irrigation systems, and plants.
 Ramps

STRUCTURAL FILL REPLACEMENT
CUPOLEX is a forming system for providing an easy, efficient and fast solution for replacing
structural fill. The CUPOLEX RIALTO system was innovated to provide heights from 500mm
(20 inches) to 2500mm (100 inches). This cutting edge forming system comprises of the
CUPOLEX dome technology installed with pipes and bases that quickly interlock and
connect to each other composing a self-bearing structure ready for the placement of a
concrete slab. The elevated CUPOLEX slab supported by the matrix of columns formed by
the pipes allows the system for high load-bearing capacities and the elevated CUPOLEX
RIALTO structure and the void created below the slab can be used for various purposes and
applications.

DESIGN & ENGINEERING

We provide PE stamped shop drawings through our engineering partners globally,
construction training, and installation observation and we work closely with the design
team, the contractor, and the owner to ensure the success of the project. Each site is
different, and working with project partners to find installation solutions that address
specific site needs is a part of the service we provide.
