GEC104 (Mathematics in the Modern World)

Performance Task #2

Lesson Objectives: At the end of this chapter, the student is expected to

1. Discuss the development of mathematics from ancient times to the present;
2. Develop an appreciation for modern mathematics as a product of the contribution of
different ages, cultures, and individual mathematicians.

Instruction: Identify five works of mathematicians which we use in the present time. Write a
one-paragraph essay for each work, with a 2”x3” picture of the mathematician.

Format: Short bond paper, Times New Roman 12, 1.5 spacing, 1” margin for all sides.

Pythagoras (circa 570-495 B.C.)

•Pythagorean theorem- the famous geometric theorem that the

number of the squares on the legs of the triangle is equivalent to
the square on the hypotenuse (the side contrast to the right angle)
or, in a well-known algebraic notation which is a2+b2=c2. The
Pythagorean theorem can be used on everyday lives of the people
such as construction and architecture, two-dimensional
navigation to remotely locate the shortest distance, and to
examine the steepness of the slopes of hills or mountains.

•The five regular solids- the platonic solid that is one of the five
geometric solids which appearances are all distinguishable,
regular polygons joining at the similar three-dimensional angles. It can be used to measure the
length of staircase needed to be able to reach the window.

•The Theory of Proportions- in the meantime, Proportions are

bound in total, they are crucial because they perform as essential
markers to the framework of the sentences. They make unique
connections between persons, objects, and locations.
Isaac Newton (25 December 1642 – 20 March 1726/27)

•Three laws of motion- First law: an object will not alter its motion not until a force acts
on it. Second law: the force of an object is equivalent to its mass times its accurate
acceleration. Third law- when forces to each other of equal magnitude and contrasting
direction. Here’s an example; If you hop from a vehicle that is in motion, your body is
still moving in the direction of the vehicle. When your feet hit the ground, the grounds act
on your feet and they stop moving. You will fall because the upper part of your body
didn’t stop, and you will fall in the direction you were moving.

•Basic principles of Modern Physics- Even though Isaac Newton is famous for his
discoveries in optics (white light composition) and mathematics (calculus), it is his
composition of the three laws of motion—the basic principles of modern physics—for
which he is most well-known. We use physics in our everyday life activities such as
walking, cutting, watching, cooking, and opening and closing things. Physics is one of
the most easy-to-use sciences that offers contribution directly to the development of
science and the development of new technologies.
