INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
● With an aim to bring awareness regarding
the harmful effects of testing nuclear
weapons, every year, 29 August is observed
as the International Day against Nuclear
Tests. The special day aims at calling for an
end to such nuclear tests. This year marks
the thirteenth anniversary of the event. On
this day, the United Nations organises an
event that creates public awareness
regarding the effects of nuclear weapons
tests, and detonations and further highlights
the requirement for cessation of such
nuclear tests. Shockingly, between 1945 and
1996, a total of 2000 nuclear test explosions
were conducted 5

HISTORY

HISTORY
● The first nuclear test, called
Trinity, was conducted by the
United States Army in a desert
site in New Mexico, on July 16,
1945. The test gave the US
confidence to drop atom bombs
on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in
August 1945. An estimated
200,000 casualties occurred while
survivors suffered from radiation-
induced cancers.
A total of 2000 nuclear test
explosions were conducted
between 1945 and 1996. 8

SIGNIFANCE
To promote peace and security
world-wide and calls for urgent
need to prevent nuclear
catastrophes to avert devastating
effects on humankind, environment
and the planet.
To highlight urgent need for
cessation of nuclear weapons as
one of the means of achieving the
goal of a nuclear-weapon-free
world. 12

IMPACT ON INDIA
. Nuclear testing has immediate and long-term
effects caused by radiation and radioactive
fallout. Increased rates of cancer have been
associated with nuclear testing, with studies
showing that thyroid cancer is linked to
radionuclides. After a nuclear test, large areas
of land remain radioactive for decades after the
test.
● The health impact of different levels of
radiation varies from nausea and vomiting to
death within days.
● Radiation exposure is measured in roentgen
equivalent man (rem) – a unit of radiation
measurement applied to humans resulting from
exposure to one or many types of ionising
radiation.
