1 Introduction
The Nav Data Distribution Box SAM 9512 offers the ability of easy handling of two nav data sources to
eight outputs. Each output can be connected to two possible receivers (resulting in a maximum of 16
listening devices). Additional features are opportunity of flexible switching, alteration of data-speed,
merging of data and fail-safe routing in case of loss of power-supply (with installed piggy-pack PCB
9512PP).
The status of the SAM9512 is displayed via 6 LED on the front (see 5 "LED-Indicators").
An alarm-signal with potential-free NC- and NO-relay-contacts is available (with installed piggy-pack PCB
9512PP - see 4.1 "Alarm").
☞ This document describes the functionalities of the software-version 1.1.1 and above.
2 General information
The SAM 9512 has two inputs for NMEA-signals 1). Both signals can be routed in different ways. The setup
of the options is done via the DIP-switch SW1, with its contacts SW1-1 to SW1-5. SW1-6 is not used
(see 3.1 "Configuration of SAM 9512").
The resulting output then is applied to the outputs OUT1 to OUT8. To each output two listeners may be
connected, defining the maximum of 16 receivers that can be supplied from one SM 9512. For enhance-
ment of outputs the SAM 9512 can be installed cascaded, meaning an output of the first SAM 9512 is
connected to an input of a downstreamed SAM 9512 (see 3.2 "Electrical Connection").
The piggy-pack 9512PP ensures to have the incoming-signal at IN1 be available at OUT8, even in case
of loss of power supply to the SAM 9512 or in case of a failure of the SAM 9512.
The connection to these ports is controlled by relays and wired on the piggy-pack 9512PP and the in-
and outgoing cabling to the external units has to be connected the labeled ports INPRIO and OUTPRIO
(see 3.6 "Connection of prioritized signals").

DIP-Switch
Priority-
Connectors
There is no need to configure the piggy-pack 9512PP. The configuration of the SAM 9512 is done via
DIP-switch SW1 as described in the next paragraph (3.1 "Configuration of SAM 9512").
Drawing of the connectors with their labels can be seen at 3-8 "Connectors of SAM 9512". The circuit
diagram of the 9512PP can be seen at 10.5 "Circuit diagram Piggy-pack PCB".
NOTE: The piggy-pack 9512PP should not be removed normally.
1) NMEA is used in this document to refer to the standards NMEA 0183 and IEC 61162-1/2.
3 Installation
SW1 consists of 6 independent DIP-switches of which only the switches 1 to 5 are used.
NOTE: The transmission-parameters are set to 8-N-1
CAUTION: Always push RESET-button after modification of DIP-switch setting.
See figure 2-1 "Piggy-pack 9512PP installed with internal connections"
Alternatively the unit can be powered OFF and On.
☞ Standard-configuration at the time of delivery is all switches set to OFF, resulting in a fixed routing
for input-signal at IN1 with a baudrate of 2400bd.

Mode Explanation
Fixed The named input-channel is used (routed) only. The other input-
(Input-modes 1&2) channel will not be used at all.
The input-channel that is named as PRIMARY will be routed to the
Auto-Switch outputs. Only in case of loss of the primary input-signal, the SAM
(Input-modes 3&4) 9512 automatically switches over to routing of the secondary input-
channel.
the input-channel IN1 and IN2 will both be routed to the outputs.
if one incoming data-telegram has been fed to the output, the next
telegram will be taken from the next active incoming signal.
The baudrate of the output will always be the same as for IN1. The
Multiplex data-speed for this has to be set according to table
3-1 "SW1-(1+2) - Setting of primary baudrate".
(Input-modes 5...8)
However, the baudrate of IN2 may be different and will be
converted to the set output-baudrate.
The baudrate for IN2 has to be selected via modes 5 ... 8 of above
table 3-2 "SW1-(3...5) - Setting of input mode"
Depending on the shielding-type of the cable in use, different methods of connection are required.
Please check carefully which type of cable is
used before connecting the RS-422-wires.
For easy wiring it possible to connect listeners in daisy-chain as shown in the lower section of the
following drawing.
The cables can be mounted by means of stainless-steel clamps to the shackles of the housing.
Depending of the type of the wire (See figure 3-3 "Shielding variations") at least contacts A&B have to be
connected.
3.4 Power-Supply
The SAM 9512 supports redundant power-supply by using two independent 24VDC-Power-Supplies.
In case of loss of primary power-source PS1, or even drop of voltage below the required minimum-value,
the control-logic automatically switches over to PS2. The power-supply in use is indicated on the front-
panel (see chapter 5 "LED-Indicators").
Both power-supply-input are protected individually on the Main-PCB via the safety-fuses F1 & F2, rated
500mA / 250V (See figure 3-8 "Connectors of SAM 9512").
3.5 Alarm-Contacts
The most important input- and output-signal have to be connected to the piggy-pack-unit 9512PP,
which ensures to have the incoming-signal at IN1 be available at OUT8, even in case of loss of power
supply to the SAM 9512 or in case of a failure of the SAM 9512.
This means instead of connecting the main output to OUT8, it has to be connected to OUTPRIO on the
piggy-pack 9512PP and the most important input-signal must be connected to INPRIO on the 9512PP.
All necessary cabling to the Main-PCB is done at factory-side as shown below.

4 Status-Signals
4.1 Alarm
These contacts (X7-5 + X7-6) indicate the current statically used input signal (not valid for multiplex-
operation).
High resistance indicates the usage of IN1, low resistance indicates usage of IN2.
☞ If the SAM 9512 is configured for multiplex-mode, the status-signal for Active-Input is set to high-
impedance.
5 LED-Indicators
The front-panel has six indicators to display various information about the current status the SAM 9512.
This Signals of Power-1 and Power-2 are hardware driven. The other indicators are driven by means of
software-control.
Name Explanation
This LED indicates available DC-supply for Power-1 and the usage of it.
Power 1 If there is no Power-lamp at all, this indicates total loss of power-supply and
therefore emergency-routing of the priority input- and output-signal.
This LED indicates available DC-supply at Power-2, and no availability of Power-1
Power 2 or at least a low-voltage-condition of Power-1.
This LED indicates active Signal (Routing) of the signal at IN1.In multiplex-mode
Input 1 both input-indicators will be active.
This LED indicates active Signal (Routing) of the signal at IN2.
Input 2
In multiplex-mode both input-indicators will be active.
This LED indicates the input-channel-selection via the switch at S0-S1-S2 as
described in 3.7 "Manual input-selection".
Ext. Select If this LED is active the switch-setting of 3.1.2 "SW1-3 to SW1-5 - Setting of
input mode" is not used, only the position of the external switch for signal-selec-
tion indicates the used input.
This LED indicates active multiplexing mode of input-signals IN1 and IN2
Multiplex according to the internal setting of 3.1.2 "SW1-3 to SW1-5 - Setting of input
mode".

6.1 NMEA-signals
The SAM 9512 can be used for GMDSS-equipment to connect two GNSS-data-transmitters for combined
NMEA data transfer to GMDSS or Nav equipment. This so-called multiplexing is available since software
version V1.1.2.
Please refer to the following chapter 7.2 "Version 1.1.2 - S/N above DWyymm02215" for details.
The setup for the different modes (including manual-, or automatic-input-switching) can be found at
paragraphs 3.1 "Configuration of SAM 9512" and 3.7 "Manual input-selection"
If the SAM9512 is used to supply NMEA messages from GNSS-equipment to NACOS/Platinum only the
INPRIO and OUTPRIO terminals have to be used. It is not permitted to connect another GNSS equipment
to input terminal IN2 neither for manual switch-over nor for multiplex and other available operating
conditions which can be set by the DIP switch.
7 Software-Versions
Up to S/N DWyymm02215 with Software V 1.1.1 it is mandatory to use an external switch for input-
selection, if the installed NAV equipment is of the same kind (congeneric).
Signals of identical type like two GPS, GPS & DGPS, two DGPS or two echo sounders (etc.), may not be
multiplexed.
Above serial no. DWyymm02215 a new SW version 1.1.2 is used to enable multiplex operation of NAV
equipment of the same type on German flag vessels as well, due to an additional “byte of origin”, which
is set ahead the NMEA messages starting with either a “$” or “!”.
This byte of origin indicates the input ports to which the signals are connected to.
NOTE: This new functionality does not overrule the statement under 6.1.2 "GNSS-data-restriction
for NACOS Platinum".
Multiplex operation example with byte of origin:
- Internal selected Mode: Multiplex, channel 1 and 2
- External selected Mode: no selection
