Patented Baffle Head Air Core Bird Cyclean cleaners are sorting devices that separate mineral and orgenic debris from acceptable paper- making fibers by the difference in specific gravity. Thus, contaminants such as metal, stone, glass, sand and the denser forms of wood debris with their higher specific gravisies can be separated from good fibers which have a lower specific gravity. Bird Cyclean cleaners are hydrocyclones which remove un: wanted particles from paper or pulp stock by a combination of centrifugel force and fluid shear. They work on the principle of a free vortex. generated by the momentum applied to a fluid by a pump to develop cen- trifugal action. In other words, a cleaner does not spin the luid like a centrifuge..the fluid spins in the cylin drical cleaner body like the water spin: ning as it drains out of « wash basin. Rejects As stock enters the cleaner tangentially, a directed rotating motion is im- parted to the stock. This motion transforms into two separate and distinct ows one, a downward flow of centrifugally separated dirt and two, an up: ward flow of clean pulp whose direction has changed because of liquid shear and resulting drop in pressure. Thus, accepts flow inward and up: ward towards the outlet while dirt particles are carried te the outer wall of the cylinder and slide downward and cut the reject tip. While a liquid free column of air develops about the axis of the cleaner, it is blocked from entering the accepts outlet by Bird's patented air baffle Features - © Full 260° guided Ls scroll @ High velocity nozzle @ Investment cast stainless steal @ Herd, tlow-turned oylinder and ‘cone. The smaller the unit, the higher its efficiency on specks and similar type dirt. 2. The larger the unit, che longer the shive dat can be removed. (An exception to thie rule is the Bird Triclean® Cleaner.) 3. As efficiency on speck dirt increases, so does the con- centrating effect on short fibers 4. Best efficiency is obtained at a fiber consistency of 0.5% or slightly less with softwood, 0.7% with herd. wood. As consistency increases from 0.5% to 10%, the efficiency decreases. For consistencies below 0.25%, there is a slightly higher percent fiber bleed With some fibers, the flow rate through the unit in- creases with increasing consistencies (On paper machine applications, filler materials are normally not included in calculating consistency.) ‘5. In general, secondary and tertiary units are necessary to recover the fiber bled from the primary units. 6. Secondary and tertiary units concentrate more than the primary units and should be run at the same or, preferably, a lower consistency 7. To control the amount of fiber lost from any system, adjust the reject rate of the last stage with = Bird Elutricone Reject Control Device 8. The reject rate can be increased by increasing the back pressure or increasing the reject tip opening. 9. Units can run against a back pressure as long as the proper pressure drop is provided at the cleaner. Back pressure should be held constant so that throughput will be constant and maximum efficiency meintain- ed 10. The selection of the pressure drop used will vary according to cleanliness wanted, power cost and cost of pumping equipment. Efficiencies are equal at ranges shown on volumetric curves. 11. Asa safey feature, cleaners are designed to withstand a maximum pressure of 100 psi. ‘IRD CVELEAN CLEANERS —SGPWT “i B Tr Description and Specifications Bird 4” 38 GPM Cyclean Cleaner ‘The 4” size cleaner is exceptionally efficient for removing specks and short shives up to 3/16” long, Rating is 38 GPM. inlet flow at 40 psi pressure drop with 1 to 2 GPM reject flow at 5 psi back pressure, Purgeable Tip It is normally furnished with Bird's patented purgeable tip assembly designed to free blockages by flushing water downward to dislodge debris and force it through the tip. Bird 5° 115 GPM Cyclean Cleaner A balfled head is featured in the 5” cleaner and is rated at 1ISGPM inlet ‘low at 35 psi pressure drop with § psi beck, pressure, Rejects are 2 to 5 GPM. Shives up to 1/4”, as well fas specks, are efficiently removed. Bird 7” 400 GPM Cyclean Cleaner The bafile head is also a feature of the 7" cleaner that is rated for 400 GPM inlet flow, 2 35 psi pressure drop at 5 psi back pressure. Rejects are 5 to 25 GPM. This is a good general purpose cleaner for paper machines obviating the need for vacuum reject systems, mela fefc] o a see 2a) 1220°0a.| 1250°02. | 1°09 990 Sse 8° | re00"¢a,| tse NPT | 14"¢a./18 opm veege ae | eve LAT | supra 720 gpm The Bird Elutricone® Reject Control Unit High recovery of fiber normally lost in cleaner rejects is possible with the accessory Bird Elutricone Reject Control unit. It allows adjustment of the cleaner syatem to changes in fiber type and adaptation to periods of high or low dirt content, Elevated temperatures in stock cleaning systems often result in cleaning problems ‘and high fiber loss. Such temperatures lower water viscosity causing high concen- trations of cleaner rejects versus feed. The Elutricone unit adds the necessary dilution to the lower section to correct this condition It also has the advantage of stable and con: sistent performance since it is substantially less sensitive to normal fluctuations in elutriati pressure or flow than conventional units How It Works Dilution water is added tangentially into the Elutricone unit which replaces the conventional cleaner lower cone. A figure eight configuration of the interior creates eddy current transfer which promotes smooth and thorough mixing of the dilution water and makes possible sharp separation of dirt and fiber. Much of the good fiber is returned to the accepts stream while the dirtrich rejects are concentrated into 2 much smaller stream, Elutriation can be either fresh or lean the choice depending upon the grade of furnish, quality of available white water, the stage at which Elutricone units are used, and other consider ations. A single valve and a pressure gauge are the only controls required for a bank of cleaners white water with Specifications Elutricone units are constructed of wear resistant, aluminum oxide ceramic materials for long life and low maintenance. Two-piece assembly makes internal inspec tion simple should it be required. Units are available in sizes to match 4", 5°, and 7” Cyclean Cleaners. 2 ‘hanar Sin] Normal GPM] Mie.
