INTERPRETATION IC 15-2001-1 OF

ANSIIASHRAE STANDARD 15-2001

SAFETY CODE FOR MECHANICAL REFRIGERATION

March 4,2002
As Modified in Committee Meeting June 23,2002, in Honolulu

Request from: Mr. Joseph Pillis (e- mail: joe.pillis@york.com), York Refiigeration, 1O0 CV
Avenue, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania 17268.

Reference: This request for interpretation refers to the requirements presented in

ANSUASHUE Standard 15-2001, Appendix H.

Background: When using equation 1 or 2 from Appendix H to calculate the allowable

equivalent length of discharge piping, (L), leaving many standard refiigeration safety relief
valves, the calculated length may be very short, or a negative number when the outlet diameter
of the relief device is used as the inside diameter of the pipe or tube, (d).

Interpretation : When equation 1 or 2 yields a negative calculated equivalent length or an

insufficient length to connect to the atmosphere in accordance with 9.7.8, the standard allows a
'
transition to a larger pipe diameter (d), at t k outlet of the relief device, provided that the
equivalent length of the transition plus the larger discharge piping is less than the calculated
allowable equivalent length (L).

Question : Is this Interpretation correct?

Answer : Yes.

Comment :No comments.
