Carolina Corcho

Diana Carolina Corcho Mejía (Medellín, April 13, 1983) is a Colombian physician,
psychiatrist and political scientist. She has been vice-president of the Colombian
Medical Federation, and president of the NGO Corporación Latinoamericana Sur
and the National Association of Interns and Residents (ANIR). She was appointed
by Gustavo Petro as Minister of Health and Social Protection as of August 7, 2022.

Early years and studies

Daughter of professor and engineer Freddy Hernán Corcho of the National


University and deputy to the Assembly of Antioquia and engineer and former mayor
of Zaragoza (Antioquia) Amparo Mejía.

Corcho studied medicine at the Universidad de Antioquia and psychiatry at the


Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and received a master's degree in political
studies from the Universidad Pontificie Bolivariana.

She was president of the Corporación Latinoamericana del Sur, a civil society
organization that deals with various public policy issues, in agrarian, economic,
social, health, and human rights issues, (2018 - 2022). Vice-president of the
Colombian Medical Federation (2018 - 2022), a body of the medical guild, permanent
advisor to the National Government on public policies on health and education in the
sector. Co-founder and member of the Progressive Women's Network of Latin
America, stage of political parties and civil society organizations of the PAOLA group
of Latin America, International Center, Olof Palme (2022).

She was a member of the Follow-up Commission of the Sentence T-760 for a
Structural Reform of the Health System. Civil society advisory body to the
Constitutional Court on Public Health Policy, 2022.

She was part of the coordination committee of the Social and Political Summit for
the Structural Reform of the Health System, convergence between various
academic, scientific, civil society and political sectors for the debate and discussion
of a proposal for structural reform of the health system that develops the statutory
law 1751 of 2015, (2021-2022).

He was a member of the Great National Medical Board. Body in which converge the
Presidents of the medical guilds at national level, co-authors of the Statutory Law
1751 of 2015.

She was a member of the National Council of Mental Health, advisory body of the
National Government in matters of public policy on Mental Health, representing the
medical associations and scientific societies (2017).

She was Consultant of PAHO - Ministry of Health and Social Protection in piloting
for the implementation of a syringe exchange model in population consuming Heroin
in Colombia (2014).

She worked in ANIR, where she served as president, fought to save the San Juan
de Dios Hospital and convened the statutory health law. After these events she
gained notoriety and caught the attention of the then mayor of Bogota Gustavo Petro
who appointed her as director of Social Participation in the Secretariat of Health of
Bogota between 2014 and 2016

Corcho declared herself a cheerful woman, in love with what she does, committed
with a vocation for service. "I value in people humility, loyalty, spirituality and
transparency, I do not tolerate injustice, nor the violation of rights," she said on her
website.

He said that his slogans are to contribute his experiences, knowledge and strength
in a project for a more just society, in defense of the right to health.

Within their struggles, within the framework of the pandemic, they have highlighted
the fact that vaccines should be a universal public good.
