Writing Explanations

DIRECTIONS: Follow these steps to write the first draft of your written explanation.

Steps for Writing Explanatory Text

1 Select an appropriate topic—one that requires explanation and one you know well.
2 List the main ideas that should be part of your explanation.
3 Make notes about the details that you will use as support for your main ideas.
4 Write an explanation that includes all of your main ideas and supporting details.

Step 1: Select an appropriate topic—one that requires explanation and one you know well.
Use the table below to record your ideas for an explanatory topic. First list three or four topics
you know or understand well. Then, for each of those topics, list one thing that is complicated or
detail enough to require explanation—not just information. Choose and check one of the topics
in the list.

Topics You Know Well What You Could Explain

Tennis How to hit with topspin
Videogames How to use the character in the game
Food How to cook pastas
Electronic devices How to clean your files

Step 2: List the main ideas that should be part of your explanation.
Once you know what you’ll explain, make a list of all the points or ideas you’ll need to get across
in your explanation. If you’re writing directions, these main ideas would be the steps that are
required. If you’re describing a process, the main ideas would be the stages of the process. If you
explaining causes or effects, list those as your main ideas

Step 3: Make notes about the details that you will use as support for your main ideas.
Now lists some details that you can include in your explanation to support each of your main
ideas. You can use details to help readers imagine what you are describing or comparing, or you
can use them to provide evidence for your ideas about causes or effects.

First copy and paste the main ideas you wrote in step 2—into this chart, one main idea per row.
Then add notes about supporting details to the second column

Main Ideas Supporting Details

Hit the ball with topspin To generate topspin we have to enter with
the racquet under the ball.

Stay calm in decisive points One way to remain calm is controlled

breathing.

The grip in the forehand We can use the west or semiwest grip,
depending on the player's taste and
playing style

Jump in the serve In the serve to generate more power, it is

necessary to help yourself with your legs
by making a jump to hit the ball.

Step 4: Write an explanation that includes all of your main ideas and supporting details.
Using your notes on this worksheet as reminders, write your explanation in the space below.

Tennis is a very complete sport that helps us to work many areas of our body and mind.
his brief explanation wants to help beginner players to learn the technique of the strokes
in tennis.
First of all it is key to be clear about the grip of the forehand, as it is the blow that is most
often executed in a match, for this there are the west or semiwest grip, the use depends
on the player.
after having a clear grip we have to generate topspin, this will be done by entering with
the racquet under the ball, and move the wrist, so the ball will generate an effect of
revolutions that bothers the opponent.

For the serve there is a unique grip called continental, with this we can generate 3 effects,
top, slice, and flat, we will also make a jump joining the legs to generate power, and at the
time of contact with the ball we will be in the air, and we will fall with the left leg if we are
right-handed, and with the right leg if we are left-handed.

Another very important area is to keep calm, because many times when playing matches
we are overcome by nerves and anxiety and we can not show the level we have, so it is
important to have a good breathing, and always think positive, without the error means so
much, I hope to have helped the new white sport players!!!!!
