1. Who is Henry Fayol? Give his contributions to management.

- Due to his contribution to management theory and principles, Henry Fayol


is rightly treated as the Father of Modern Management Thought. Fayol is
the first management thinker who provided the conceptual framework of
the functions of management in his book “General and Industrial
Management. The functions of management according to Fayol are,
1. Planning
2. Organizing
3. Staffing
4. Commanding
5. Coordinating

- According to Henry Fayol, managers should be flexible in the application


of these principles.
Fayol divided general and industrial management into following six
groups:

1. Technical activities (production, manufacture, adaptation).

2. Commercial activities (buying, selling and exchange).

3. Financial activities (search for and optimum use of capital).

4. Security activities (protection of property and persons).

5. Accounting activities (stock taking, balance sheet, cost, and statistics).

- Henry Fayol also suggested 14 principles of management. These


principles are:

1. Division of work,
2. Authority and responsibility,
3. Discipline,
4. Unity of command,
5. Unity of direction,
6. Subordination of personal interest to organizational interests,
7. Remuneration,
8. Centralization,
9. Scalar chain,
10. Order
11. Equity,
12. Stability of tenure
2. What are the management functions? Discuss each.

 Planning- is necessary to ensure proper utilization of human & non-


human resources. It is all pervasive, it is an intellectual activity and
it also helps in avoiding confusion, uncertainties, risks, wastages
etc.
 Organizing- To organize a business involves determining &
providing human and non-human resources to the organizational
structure. Organizing as a process involves:
- Identification of activities.
- Classification of grouping of activities.
- Assignment of duties.
- Delegation of authority and creation of responsibility.
- Coordinating authority and responsibility relationship
 Staffing- It involves: Manpower Planning, Recruitment, Selection
and Placement, Training and Development, Remuneration,
Performance and Appraisal, Promotion and transfer.
 Directing- is that inert-personnel aspect of management which
deals directly with influencing, guiding, supervising, motivating sub-
ordinate for the achievement of organizational goals. Direction has
following elements:
- Supervision
- Motivation
- Leadership
- Communication
 Controlling- It implies measurement of accomplishment against the
standards and correction of deviation if any to ensure achievement
of organizational goals. The purpose of controlling is to ensure that
everything occurs in conformities with the standards.
