Given its work culture, would Amazon continue to be a competitive employer and offer an attractive

employee value proposition?

Answer: The motto or work principle of Amazon is “Work fun, have fun & create history”. But in reality
it’s kind of the opposite. Amazon always pushes it’s employees to limit to get the most out of them and
achieve the company objective. It encourages the employees to be critical of each other’s work and send
feedbacks to each other’s boss silently.

This creates a hostile and cutthroat work environment. The managers rank their employees based on
performance and feedbacks. The weak ones are fired without any warning. Those who performed well
are given new targets to achieve. In short the employees are always kept on the run. This resulted in the
employees leaving the job within a short period of time.

Before the NY Times article, people didn’t know about the work environment inside Amazon. But after
the article was published, many came forward and gave interviews regarding the harsh working
environment inside Amazon. This created a negative impression about amazon in the job market.

But still amazon is growing fast and it became the fourth company to join the trillion dollar club. This
types achievements will always attract people to be a part of amazon. So, as long as amazon keeps on
growing, they would continue to be a competitive employer and attract new talents.

Did the strategy of keeping employees on the edge always result in innovation?

Answer: Amazon urges it’s employees to work hard, put in long hours and compete with each other. This
creates a dog-eat-dog type of environment inside the office. The employees continuously criticize each
other’s work, sometimes even send negative feedback about their colleagues to the manager. So, you
have to work hard and smart if you want to survive. And If you perform below average, you would be
fired.

This type of pressure either break people and they leave the job or, they perform brilliantly. In amazon, it
seems that the later part is more prominent. Though many of the employees leave the job within a few
months, a lot of them are sticking to their job and doing excellent.

Amazon hiring policy makes sure that it hires the best from the job market. And these overachievers
tend to perform really well under pressure. They thrive on the negative remarks and relentless
competitions. But there is a problem with this kind of policy. The energy and enthusiasm of the
employees won’t stay the same when they get older. They would leave the job to find something a bit
more relaxing. So, amazon has to hire more new talents. These could go on and on but the job market
doesn’t have infinite amount of brilliant young job seekers who want to work for amazon. So, sooner or
later amazon has to adopt a non-toxic work environment policy like Google.

So, in my opinion, though keeping the employees on the edge is working great for amazon, it is not a
sustainable policy for innovation
