Performance Check #1: MATTER AND ITS PROPERTIES

“Fun-cakes” 55
Name: __________________________________________
Section: _________________________________________ Date Accomplished: ______________________________

Introduction:
Matter is anything that has mass and volume. It can be described based on the arrangement of the particles comprising it –
solid, liquid, and gas; and be differentiated through a characteristic set of properties such as physical & chemical properties,
and intensive & extensive properties. Matter can also be classified either as a pure substance or a mixture. In this activity,
students are tasked to make pancakes while observing and knowing the states, properties, and classification of matter.

Objectives:
At the end of the activity, students shall be able to:
1. identify the states of matter;
2. observe phase changes in matter;
3. classify pure substances and mixtures; and
4. describe matter using physical and chemical properties.

Materials:
- 1 ½ cups Flour (C6H5O10)
- 1 tablespoon Sugar (C12H22O11)
- 3 ½ teaspoons Baking Soda (NaHCO3)
- 3 tablespoons melted Butter
- ¼ teaspoon Salt (NaCl)
- 1 Egg
- Oil
- 1 ¼ cups Milk

General Instructions:
1. This activity will be done individually at home.
2. Make sure to prepare all the ingredients.
3. Read/scan the guide questions before proceeding with the activity process.
4. Take note of all the important details asked in the activity sheet.

Activity Process:
1. In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Then, add the milk, melted butter, and egg. Combine
altogether until smooth.
2. Heat a pan over medium high heat. Make sure to spread some oil before pouring the batter onto the pan using a
measuring cup of your preferred pancake size. Wait until brown on both sides and serve.

Guide Questions:
1. List down and classify the ingredients based on the state of matter they belong to. (8 points)

2. List down and classify the ingredients whether a pure substance or a mixture. (8 points)

3. Classify whether the following characteristic is a physical or chemical property and intensive or extensive property. (9
points)
Ingredients Physical or Chemical Property
3.1 brown pancakes
3.2 being soft and fluffy
3.3 rising of bread (“umaalsa” in Tagalog)
3.4 one and one-fourth cups of milk
3.5 circular pancakes

Intensive or Extensive Property

3.6 aroma of the pancake
3.7 one bowl of pancake batter
3.8 hot pancakes
3.9 two pieces of pancake

4. When you mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, what type of mixture was formed? Describe its appearance.
(5 points)

5. When you added milk, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients and combined them altogether, what did you
notice with the composition and appearance of the batter? How will you classify batter as a type of mixture? Which
ones are the solute and solvent? (10 points)

6. Phase changes in matter happen when you either increase or decrease the temperature. In this activity, the batter
which is in the form of a liquid is subjected to heat and formed a solid pancake. This is in contrast with the idea that
liquid only turns to solid if temperature is decreased. What do you think are the factors that influenced this? Does it
have something to do with the composition of the mixture? Is there any chemical reaction that happened? What do
you call the process that caused the batter to become a solid pancake? Explain your answer and provide proper in-
text citations. Write your full-text citations at the back of this page. (15 points)
