What is Online Threats?


Is usually seen through the web that is also called Web-based threats are a
category of cybersecurity risks that may cause an undesirable event or action via the
internet. Web threats are made possible by end-user vulnerabilities, or web services
themselves.
There are many types of Online Threats that we may encounter. But in this
report, let’s talk about our topic which is Phishing

What is Phishing?
It is a sort of online threat when an attacker delivers a false message intended to
fool a person into giving the attacker sensitive informationm to install malicious
software, and asking you to fill up your personal data. It is usually encountered when
someone sent you a message, email, or a link from a random person.
What is it’s purpose? What are they trying to achieve? Its purpose is to obtain
sensitive personal data such as passwords, financial information, system credentials
and credit card information. If you click on a phishing link, the attacker will
automatically receive some basic data, such as your device statistics, approximate
location and any other information you may have voluntarily provided.

We will show you one news in regards to Phishing. It shows that Philippines
is the biggest target of phishing in Southeast Asia.
Data from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) showed that cases of finance-related
phishing attempts from February to April this year were highest in the Philippines
among Southeast Asian countries.
The portion of finance-related phishing attempts during the same period was 65.90
percent in Indonesia, 55.67 percent in Singapore, 55.63 percent in Thailand, 50.58
percent in Malaysia, and 36.12 in Vietnam.
A separate report released by Kaspersky last April showed that the Philippines was the
most hit by phishing attacks last year in the region.
How does it relate us? To students?
Us students, pretty much explore everything we see or encounter in the internet
and at times we may even get curious on things we receive on such links, or files. For
instance you may even get shocked where your facebook suddenly gets hacked due to a
link you clicked and fill up your username and password on a shady website. And that
is why it really does relate to us because of eventual happenings like this.

Ways to prevent Phishing Scams


Phishing scams can be really annoying but thannkfully phishing scams are
avoidable if you know how to correctly identify and prevent them. Here are 5 simple
tips to identify and prevent phishing scams.
1. Don’t click on a link that you may not know
2. Don’t give your information to an unsecured site
3. Have a Data Security Platform to spot signs of an attack
4. Install firewalls
5. Look out for mistakes, typos, and strange characters in the potentially phishing-
related text or email.

Phishing is dangerous because when you initiate to fill up personal info of an
unverified source. The attacker can possibly: Hijack your usernames and passwords.
Steal your money and open credit card and bank accounts in your name. Request new
account Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or additional credit cards. As
dangerous as it sounds as long as you know how to prevent a phishing scam, you will
be fine and secure so it is always important to know on how to prevent it.
